Hopefully, by now you’ve heard of the historic decision by the FCC to reclassify the Internet as a “common carrier”-- requiring Internet Service Providers (ISP) to offer service to the public and their competitors as if they were a utility. Our friends in the public interest community call the ruling a triumph of the “public interest over big money”. Others see it as “Obamacare for the Internet”.

The City Council is scheduled to finalize the “sale-leaseback” of Burlington Telecom to Bluewater Holdings. This agreement was approved by the Vermont Public Service Board in late October. The sale of BT to Bluewater Holdings enables Burlington to generate $6 million of the $10 million settlement agreement reached with Citibank to resolve the City's $33 million loan default of 2009.
