Senator Patrick Leahy: Senator Leahy Announces Effort To Permanently Authorize Foreign Investor Program 03/18/2011

Senator Patrick Leahy, Vermont Secretary of Commerce and Community Development Lawrence Miller, Jay Peak Resort President Bill Stenger, and Sugarbush President Win Smith, announce the Senator's effort to permanently authorize the popular EB-5 Immigrant Investor Regional Center program. Leahy has led efforts in the U.S. Senate to extend the pilot program since its creation in 1993. Jay Peak and Sugarbush are both part of Vermont’s successful EB-5 Pilot Project, which is administered by the state. The Regional Center program has generated more than a billion dollars in capital investment in American communities and created thousands of domestic jobs – hundreds, in Vermont -- since 1993. The Centers attract foreign investors seeking legal permanent residency and a chance to invest in the American economy.

Burlington Wards 4 & 7 NPA Meeting 03/15/2011

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 4 & 7 meet the third Tuesday of the month. Meeting place: Robert E. Miller Community Center 130 Gosse Court.

Ellen David Friedman was a union organizer in Vermont for 25 years, a founder of the Vermont Progressive Party and the Vermont Workers Center, and a “union democracy” activist before she “redeployed” to China. For the last five years she has been teaching labor studies as a Visiting Lecturer at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, and involved in the Chinese labor movement at various levels. In this talk she will give first-hand accounts of the historical strike wave that hit the Chinese auto industry last summer and compare it to the insurgency underway now in Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio.
