UVM Student Takeover of Waterman Building: Reflections on the 1991 Waterman Takeover 04/23/2011

The 1991 Takeover, along with its 1988 predecessor, were instrumental in forming the University of Vermont's policies and initiatives regarding diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion. Changes that have occurred since the takeovers include, among other things, five Presidential Commissions, the appointment of a Chief Diversity Officer, a six-credit diversity requirement and a student body that is comprised of 10% ALANA students.This panel discussion and other speakers will consider the historical context for the 1991 Waterman Takeover, and examine the changes that have come about at UVM in the past twenty years. Heather Rogers -- How our Economy is Undermining the Environmental Revolution - Will Miller Social Action Series Lecture 04/21/2011

Heather Rogers is a journalist and author. She has written for the New York Times Magazine, Mother Jones,and The Nation. Her first book, Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage, traces the history and politics of household rubbish in the United States. The book received the Editor’s Choice distinction from the New York Times Book Review, and Non-Fiction Choice from theGuardian (UK). Her documentary film, also titled Gone Tomorrow, screened in festivals around the globe. Green Gone Wrong: How Our Economy Is Undermining the Environmental Revolution, her latest book, takes a critical, on-the-ground look at popular market-based solutions to ecological destruction. Rogers has spoken internationally on the environmental effects of mass consumption and is a senior fellow at the progressive US think tank Demos.

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 4 & 7 meet the third Tuesday of the month. Meeting place: Robert E. Miller Community Center 130 Gosse Court.

Saint Michael's College presents award-winning science writer Robert Whitaker speaking on “Anatomy of an Epidemic: History, Science and the Long-Term Effects of Psychiatric Medications”. Whitaker won the George Polk Award for Medical Writing for Anatomy of an Epidemic (2010), an investigation into why the number of adults and children disabled by mental illness has skyrocketed over the past 50 years. He asks whether the widespread use of psychiatric medications could be fueling this epidemic. He is also author of the prize-winning books Mad in America (2000) and The Mapmakers Wife (2004).
