Burlington's Lost Mural & Little Jerusalem 11/21/2021

Presented by The Lost Mural Project and the Chittenden County Historical Society, this Zoom talk focuses on the creation, rescue and conservation of the Lost Mural.

From the organizers:

"The full restoration of the Lost Mural is projected to be started and completed during the first quarter of 2022!! More than half ($90,000) of the currently estimated restoration cost of $160,000 has already been secured.

The Lost Mural Project completed the Phase 1 cleaning of the Lost Mural on time and within budget! Two conservators worked from April 15th through August 31, 2021 and the results are truly dazzling. Paint sampling, testing, color palette determination and cleaning the Lost Mural of harmful varnishes, charcoal dust and grime have all been achieved.

Visits to view the Lost Mural will be scheduled on later dates; small groups (up to five (5) people at a time) are welcome to also contact me for further information at agoldbergvt@gmail.com

Our zoom presentations about the Lost Mural can also be scheduled with other organizations.

With the completion of the cleaning phase, the 1910 Lost Mural is being regarded as a universal symbol of Vermont's artistic, cultural and immigrant heritage and as one of the three most important paintings in Vermont! The Lost Mural Project secured the support and funds from individual donors and from the heart of the Vermont and New England historic preservation community: History New England, Preservation Trust of Vermont, and its separate Paul A. Bruhn Fund, Vermont Arts Council, Vermont Community Foundation, Vermont Cultural Facilities Grant, Vermont Historical Society, Vermont Humanities Council and the State of Vermont Division of Historic Preservation (as well as the National Trust for Historic Preservation for fundraising purposes)."

Preservation Burlington: The Lost Shul Mural 10/28/2021

The Lost Mural has been successfully cleaned in 2021 with layers of varnish, charcoal dust and dirt having been removed. Half the funds have been raised for the final phase of the full restoration of the Lost Mural and the project needs $75,000 more this year to complete this work in 2022. You can see all the details at lostmural.org, including information about the Lost Mural, the artist named Ben Zion Black, the history of Burlington’s “Little Jerusalem,” the history of Burlington’s three synagogues, and the timeline of the Lost Mural Project. The website includes photos and videos of the 2013-2015 stabilization, as well as the miraculous move and successful reinstallation in May, 2015 and the dazzling cleaning results from this summer 2021.

The Lost Mural Project is being completed with museum quality documentation, archival photos and videos, which it is sharing with state, national and international museums all over the world. It has partnered with many groups, including local schools, universities, and Jewish museums in the United States, Israel and Lithuania. The preservation, conservation and restoration of the Lost Mural is being assisted by many of Vermont’s historic preservation groups: Preservation Burlington, Preservation Trust of Vermont, the VT Arts Council, VT Humanities Council, Vermont Dept of Historic Preservation, VT Community Foundation , Vermont Historical Society, and Historic New England, as well as guidance, publicity and/or testimonials from the National Museum of American Jewish History (PA), the Smithsonian Institution (DC) and the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington, DC, and the International Survey of Jewish Art & Monuments.

The Con Hogan Award 2021: Dr. Lydia Clemmons 10/06/2021

The Vermont Community Foundation and the organizing committee for the Con Hogan Award for Creative, Entrepreneurial Community Leadership awarded this year's to Lydia Clemmons, PhD, MPH, President and Executive Director of the Clemmons Family Farm in Charlotte.

Established by a group of Con Hogan's colleagues in 2015, the annual award recognizes his life work by honoring a community leader who shares his vision of a better Vermont and seizes the responsibility for making that vision a reality. The awardee shows deep community involvement, generosity, enthusiasm, a collaborative approach, and a focus on data and measurable outcomes in their work.

The Suffragist Reenactment Society - Panel Discussion 10/02/2021

The focus of the panel discussion is the intersection of art, history and politics. Panel participants are Jen Berger, artist/educator and creator/leader of At the Root and adjunct faculty at Champlain College and Community College of Vermont; Selene Colburn, member, Vermont House of Representatives and faculty, UVM Department of Theatre and Dance; Kathryn Dungy, chair of Saint Michael’s College History Department; and Mary Beth McNulty, playwright for The Suffragist Reenactment Society. Mariah Riggs, director of Main Street Landing Performance Arts Center, moderates the panel.

The Vermont Suffrage Centennial Alliance (VSCA) presents the inaugural production of The Suffragist Reenactment Society in ten venues across the state.

Covering the period 1848-1920, the play is a fast-paced journey through the history of how women fought for and won the right to vote in the United States. The three dynamic stars of VSCA’s production are Vermont’s own Kathryn Blume of Charlotte (The Roommate, Three Days of Rain, The Seagull), Sarah Mell of Winooski (Popcorn Falls, Taming of the Shrew, “Blackberry Winter,”) and Julia Sioss of Colchester (Sense and Sensibility, The Wolves, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.)

Blume, Mell, and Sioss embody the determination of suffragists from Susan B. Anthony to Ida B. Wells while addressing the complex interplay of race and gender in the suffrage movement and its continuing impact today. Full of facts, fun, and historical figures, the play asks audiences to consider the stories we hear and, more importantly, those we don’t, when we teach and learn about the history of social movements. The Suffragist Reenactment Society is written by Mary Beth McNulty and directed by Laura Roald.

The Suffrage Reenactment Society is proudly presented by VSCA as part of its mission to commemorate the centennial of women winning the vote via the 19th Amendment.
