Gaza Gray Lady Cantata No. 7

The ever-evolving Gray Lady Cantata, which began its life in the late 60's in NYC as part of the Angry Arts Movement. Peter Schumann tells of its evolution at the beginning of this piece.

The July 27, 2024 performance of this Summer's Circus and Pageant! This documentation features incredibly spirited band opening music as prelude and sustaining energy of cutting-through political satire and poignant scenes of Palestinian suffering in the ongoing Genocide in Gaza. Somehow, despite the devastation, Bread and Puppet engenders Hope.

Director Peter Schumann describes the show as featuring, “tigers teaching the congress of cowards how to jump over billionaires and acquire the courage to not pay for the atrocities of the latest genocide; the proverbial sheep of the system refusing to be sheep and committing revolution against the system; and the blue horses of the peace and harmony terrorists of the Northeast Kingdom breaking through the wall of threatening clouds that hide the truth from the population and then galloping over the ruins of the truth industry.”

Don't miss the Pageant and the Gaza Emergency Mass Oratorio! It precedes a tour of the Anti-Modern Museum featuring spontaneous improvisatory cantastoria performances of the huge collection of Peter Schumann's Bedsheets by Company Members and Volunteers.

This video documents Part 5 of Peter Schumann's Rabble-Rouser Mural series, In and Out Off We Go Riding Through the All! which has been an evolutionary installation there since February of 2020.

Natural deterioration of these large paintings on thin paper applied as papier maché to the brick walls of the former Rabble-Rouser building is part of Peter Schumann's intention and messaging for this process art series.

The GAZA GREY LADY CANTATA was filmed at the June 2, 2024 Bread and Puppet Museum Opening, directed by Maria Schumann with a cast of volunteers and interns, in evocation of the ongoing Gaza Genocide. The piece revives music from the original Grey Lady Cantata created by Peter Schumann in the late 60's and early 70's to protest the Vietnam War.
