Nuclear Free Future host Margaret Harrington talks with Maggie Gundersen, President of Fairewinds Energy Education, and Arnie Gundersen, Chief Engineer of Fairewinds, about decommissioning nuclear power plants, “just transitions” for communities losing their nukes, costs, and long-term radiation after site clean up. They discuss “Interim Waste” storage in Texas and New Mexico, transportation problems, the cleanup of bomb factories and mining sites on native land, and the reality that the cost of nukes is astronomical.

At an airport press conference, Rep. Peter Welch outlines efforts he will make upon returning to Washington to ensure Vermont receives the federal assistance it needs to recover from Tropical Storm Irene. Welch will preside over a bipartisan meeting he arranged of House Members from the 47 districts impacted by the storm. FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and White House staff will also participate. The goal of the meeting is to review the recovery effort and steps the group can take to ensure states affected by the storm receive the federal assistance they need to recover.
