The Friends of Lakeview Cemetery (and Louisa Howard Chapel) and Preservation Burlington will be leading a tour on November 2nd, 11 a.m. of
Lakeview Cemetery, starting with a brief presentation by the Friends of Lakeview Cemetery at the Louisa Howard Chapel. Diana Carlisle from Friends of Louisa Howard Chapel and Lakeview Cemetery will make a brief presentation and Ryan Harron, PB Board Member will do the tour of the cemetery.

University of Vermont Presidential Lecture Series: Hate: Why We Should Resist It With Free Speech, Not Censorship 10/29/2024

Each academic year, the University of Vermont explores an aspect of today’s society through several components of its Presidential Lecture Series. Each lecture, made possible by endowments from generous donors, explores a particular aspect of that theme.

For the 2024-25 academic year, the university explores the perennial but newly clamorous question of free speech. Who can, cannot, does, and does not speak in the public and private sphere? Why and why not?

Nadine Strossen, former president of the American Civil Liberties Union and professor emeritus at New York University, will deliver the Aiken Lecture. Strossen is best known for convictions concisely encapsulated in the title of her 2018 book, HATE: Why We Should Resist It with Free Speech, Not Censorship. Introduced by Interim President Patty Prelock.

Homeless Nation: Perspectives from Burlington Community Members 10/29/2024

Community member James Crawford meets with April Fisher, Pathways Vermont Community Center Supervisor and community member Serene Baldwin on this episode of Homeless Nation, in which he interviews fellow homeless people about their lives. It is a show from the perspectives of Burlington community members with lived experiences of homelessness. They talk about what it's like to be homeless, the challenges they have faced, and what they believe society should do to make housing accessible for all.

Chittenden County Historical Society: Moses Whitcomb's "Monitor Barn" and Other Iconic Structures Built by Charles Miller 10/20/2024

From the Chittenden County Historical Society:

The presentation by Eliot Lothrop will explore the land accumulation of the Whitcomb family during the second half of the 19th century, culminating in Moses' ownership- the peak of dairy farming at the farm. In1901, Moses had the East Monitor Barn built, hiring the 36 year old Charles Miller, from North Ferrisburgh, to frame it. Born into a family of timber framers, Miller had already built several monumental barns around Chittenden and Addison County. We'll look at several of Miller's other barns.

Town Meeting TV is excited to announce that applications are now open for the Spring 2025 cohort of the Neighborhood Community Media Internship program. Join up to 8 other youth to engage in interesting media making projects! This paid media internship opportunity is designed for youth aged 16-20 who are eager to gain professional experience in the audio-visual field and develop a deeper understanding of their local community. The group will meet under the leadership of Town Meeting TV's Travis Washington from the end of January 2025 to the beginning of June 2025, on a schedule agreed upon by the whole cohort.
