Vermont Access Network (VAN): Freedom and Unity: The Vermont Movie (Presentation) 05/05/2011

FREEDOM AND UNITY: THE VERMONT MOVIE: A collaborative film involving over 20 Vermont filmmakers that explores the history of Vermont's independent spirit and activism, from the past to the present. Project Coordinator Nora Jacobson will screen a segment from the work-in-progress and discuss how the film has evolved. The project addresses critical and difficult aspects of Vermont's history from a variety of perspectives and is a model for how the collaborative process can be used to tell our history. Jacobson will be joined by Project Administrator Nat Winthrop, Producer's Committee member Deb Ellis, and Filmmaker Eleanor Lanahan.

Ed Von Sitas, member of the Essex Memorial Day Parade Committee, speaks with the 4 Grand Marshals of the 2011 Essex Memorial Day Parade. Bob Marcotte, Veteran of WW II, Leo Nadeau, Veteran of Vietnam and Dominican Republic, Frederick Dirmaier, Veteran of WW II, and Ralph 'Lefty' Guillette, Veteran Korea/Vietnam. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 27th, 8pm in the Essex Congregational Church. Parade starts at 10am on Saturday, May 28th through the 5 corners.

HowardCenter Diversity Committee and HowardCenter Developmental Services host a powerful evening of film and panel presentation celebrating the closing of the state institutions that housed people with Developmental Disabilities in Vermont and New Hampshire until the 1990s. The amazing difference that inclusion in the community made for people with Developmental Disability will be highlighted in the presentation

The feature film is Lost in Laconia, a powerful documentary created by Gordon DuBois, about the closing of Laconia State School in New Hampshire in 1991. Vermont closed Brandon Training School soon after and was the first state to achieve complete community integration. The film will be followed by a panel comprised of clients and staff from HowardCenter who lived and worked at the Brandon Training School and film maker Gordon DuBois. The Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq is represented in the U.S. by a diplomatic representative independent of the Embassy of Iraq. In this role, Mr. Qubad Talabani has worked to promote greater understanding of the Kurdish people, and the political realities in Iraqi Kurdistan, Iraq, and the region.

Saint Michael's College presents award-winning science writer Robert Whitaker speaking on “Anatomy of an Epidemic: History, Science and the Long-Term Effects of Psychiatric Medications”. Whitaker won the George Polk Award for Medical Writing for Anatomy of an Epidemic (2010), an investigation into why the number of adults and children disabled by mental illness has skyrocketed over the past 50 years. He asks whether the widespread use of psychiatric medications could be fueling this epidemic. He is also author of the prize-winning books Mad in America (2000) and The Mapmakers Wife (2004). Sponsored by the Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology and the Psychology Department.

CCTV Receives NEH Grant to Support Community Archives

CCTV Center for Media & Democracy is pleased to announce receipt of a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant alongside 32 peer archival institutions across the country.
