Burlington Receives Two National Service Grants for Service Positions in the Community 09/21/2010

Burlington is fortunate to be one of the beneficiaries of President Obama’s new efforts to grow volunteerism and service as one means foraddressing people’s needs, in particular during the economic downtown. Burlington’s Center for community and Neighborhoods has received 2 distinct grant awards to infuse the community with 40 diverse AmeriCorps and VISTA organizers who will serve in government, schools and non-profit agencies. The newly passed National Service Act will support a new wave of service and civic action to help tackle the nation’s toughest challenges. This renewed effort is evidenced in Burlington where over 300 individuals applied to compete for the 40 year-long service positions in the community.

Jeff Conant is a writer, educator, and social justice activist with a focus on international development and ecology. His book, A Poetics of Resistance: the Revolutionary Public Relations of the Zapatista Insurgency (AK Press, 2010) examines the cultural politics of the Zapatista movement of Chiapas, Mexico, focusing on the Zapatistas' persuasive use of symbolic language and colorful imagery to bring their struggle to the world's attention. CCTV Center for Media & Democracy is pleased to announce receipt of a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant alongside 32 peer archival institutions across the country.
