Description

Delia Robinson presents a talk and Crankie show for the ballad "Death and the Lady.” A beautiful minor key conversation between a woman and death, this song is tied to two distinct art movements. The first, "The Dance of Death” emerged from the fear and social disorder caused by the Black Plague in the Middle Ages, but eventually, death was no longer depicted claiming lines of dancing victims. Instead, a solitary female became Death’s ideal focus. “The White Plague,” or TB, inspired vast amounts of art known as ”Death and the Maiden” in painting, theater, novels, poetry, and music. This theme still inspires artists and the ballad is still occasionally sung. Presented September 20, 2019 at the Kent Museum in Calais, Vermont.
