Mayor Miro Weinberger announces his appointment, Kim Carson, for the City of Burlington’s next Director of Racial Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. The appointment will be before the Burlington City Council for approval at their regular meeting on Monday, November 7.

What You Are Doing About Equity in Burlington 08/13/2019

At "What Equity Looks like in Burlington" the State Commissioner of Human Resources told us about the hiring of the State Executive Director of Racial Equity. Over 80 folks turned out and struggled with tough questions like How do WE address equity in Burlington? What are the three most important things that WE can do? What should WE do NEXT?

We came back to discuss what WE came up with and what WE can do next. We have got to move this equity discussion to action. This is where it starts. This time we're orienting ourselves to action on community matters of equity, diversity and inclusion.

We invited some some city officials back to hear what they are doing.

Justice For All TV: As Goes Burlington - Part 2 07/26/2019

Host Mark Hughes is joined by Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo. With the honor of having the police chief on the show, Mark takes the time to get his perspectives on the way in which Burlington is moving forward with racial equity, diversity, and inclusion. They discuss the gathered data collection from 2018 such as car stops and use of force. Mark also gets a perspective the Police Chief's insight on diversity in the department, what the city is doing at a local level, and what is being done at a state level. 

Last week the Governor announced the appointment of the first “Racial Equity Executive Director” in Vermont history. This long awaited appointment is the latest step in the implementation of Act 9 (2018), a bill that created a panel and this Executive Director “to identify and work to eradicate systemic racism within State government.” During this episode, Mark and the Police Chief take a closer look into the duties of Racial Equity Executive Director. They also take a look into the Racial Dispaities and State Stystems Report (ACT 54) from 2017. This report was put together by the Attorney General and Human Rights Commission Task Force.

Vermont Racial Justice Alliance: What Does Equality Look Like in Burlington? 07/09/2019

This is a forum to hear from the community on matters of equity, diversity and inclusion.

There is lots of talk from elected officials about the necessity for Vermont to grow its economy. It can only do so with a dramatic change of the racial demographics of the State. We all know that this will not be sustainable until we address factors contributing to the systemic nature of racism in the State. The population and race demographics of Burlington scream the fact that “as goes Burlington, so goes Vermont." This is a community conversation about that.

Who are we, as a City? Who do we hope to become? How will we get there?

This strategic session gives an opportunity to wrestle with some of these questions and discuss solutions.

Mayor Weinberger, Chief Del Pozo and Superintendent Obeng were invited to listen.
