Greater Burlington Women's Forum: Beyond #MeToo - Workplace Sexual Harassment 03/23/2018

Sexual harassment and abuse charges against powerful personalities have created a kind of public reckoning. Our shared voices in the media and the #MeToo movement are driving change, yet pushing back against the behavior patterns of sexual harassment, so common in workplaces across the country, is not easy. When is it safe to speak up? What happens if we do say something? Who do we turn to if we decide to speak up? How might the passage of new laws in Vermont change the climate?

Greater Burlington Women's Forum: Hidden Disabilities 11/16/2017

Deaf, autism, dyslexia, hard of hearing, neurological issues, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, psychiatric disability, intellectual disabilities, multiple sclerosis. This is a short list of specific disabilities people live with that can be invisible to others. 

Disabilities that aren’t readily apparent are important to understand. No matter your field—from human resources, social services and education, to customer service or even website development—understanding hidden disabilities will help you navigate the world better.

Panelists Valerie DeBrita, Sarah Launderville, and Angela Gowans share personal experiences, important facts, and recommend helpful resources.

Common Good Vermont: Worklife Balance: Integrate Renewal into Your Busy Day 03/16/2017

Susan believes that “balance” is a misnomer for what most of us are seeking in life: instead, she’s a fan of what some have called work-life integration.  The idea is to craft ways of integrating your major activities so that your work enriches the development your mind, body and spirit in ways that serve your personal growth; and reciprocally, so that your personal life energizes and propels your work. The goal, then, becomes generating a virtuous cycle of renewal as opposed to “managing” competing demands.  We’ll discuss with Susan some recommended strategies for promoting our integration and renewal, including the practice of spending an hour every day – combined – attending playfully to our bodies, our creativity, and our spirit (i.e. connecting with someone or something larger than ourselves).

Join up to 8 other youth to engage in interesting media making projects! This paid media internship opportunity is designed for youth aged 16-20 who are eager to gain professional experience in the audio-visual field and develop a deeper understanding of their local community. The group will meet under the leadership of Town Meeting TV's Travis Washington from the end of January 2025 to the beginning of June 2025, on a schedule agreed upon by the whole cohort.
