The local chapter of RESULTS welcomes Selamawit Adugna Bekele, an international activist and expert from Ethiopia, to Vermont! Selamawit discusses the education crisis worldwide, how it affects the US, and what you can do to help!
Selamawit Adugna Bekele is a passionate education, youth, and gender activist from Ethiopia. She started her career as a teacher in Addis Ababa, working directly to address the challenges students face in accessing a quality education in her country. She has spent her career supporting girls who are marginalized by problems of early marriage, risky migration, domestic labor, and street-involvement.
Selamawit is a UN Representative for Moremi Initiative, a Ghana-based Pan-African organization promoting young women's leadership and social justice in Africa. She also serves as a Vital Voices Fellow, as well as a Global Youth Ambassador for A World at School, a diverse movement of youth, business leaders, influential individuals, NGOs, faith groups, and media. Thanks to the dedication of advocates like Selamawit, Ethiopia has seen great strides in its education system, including increasing the number of children enrolled in primary school from 23 percent in 1999 to 86 percent in 2014.
