Artful Word: Buffalo Soldiers 100 Years in Vermont 08/01/2009

In July of 1909, seven hundred and fifty 10th cavalry “Buffalo Soldiers” marched into Vermont for their assignment at Fort Ethan Allen, Colchester, Vermont. Prior to their arrival, they had been stationed in various other locations such as Cuba, Kansas, and the Philippines, all warmer climates. Their first fall and winter in Vermont found them ill equipped for the weather as they were still wearing summer issue clothing. Sgt. George Osborne said he “like to froze to death.” Capt. Edward Glass, the regiment's historian, reported “The first winter in Ethan Allen was a long, hard grind, with guard tours walked in blizzards, full pack inspection in weather that caused much comment from our men, who had just come from the neighborhood of the Equator.”

Remarks by Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss and Trooper Derrick Davis who will share an intriguing and informative history about the Buffalo Soldiers. Other speakers include: Representative Kesha Ram reading a letter from Senator Bernie Sanders; Dan Balon introducing the Boys & Girls Club Buffalo Soldier writing contest winner Brian Nguyen; State Senator Hinda Miller who, along with with the State Senate Chamber, passed a resolution honoring the Vermont Buffalo Soldiers.

Abenaki Dancers - Award winning Takara Matthews and Josh Hunt demonstrate some of the dances of a New England Pow-wow. This program is part of the Lake Champlain quadricentennial celebration.

CCTV Center for Media & Democracy is pleased to announce receipt of a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant alongside 32 peer archival institutions across the country.
