Community Meeting - Solidarity in the Face of Hate Speech 08/31/2009

Convened by members of local religious congregations, there will be a Community Meeting of Solidarity in the Face of Hate Speech Monday, August 31st, 2009, 7:30 pm, at the First Congregational Church in Burlington. On the eve of the implementation of Vermont's marriage equity law, this will be an opportunity for Vermonters to share in reflective and prayerful affirmation of human equality and free and fair speech. Speakers: Robert Lee, Michael Schaal, Wanda Heading-Grant, Agam Sheth, David Kingsbury, Deb Lashman and Joshua Chasan.

Farewell to Faye Lawes, Executive Secretary to the Mayor 08/31/2009

The Executive Secretary to the Mayor, Faye Lawes, will be retiring from City employment after 22 years of work in the Mayor’s Office and a career that has spanned the administrations of four different Burlington mayors, beginning in 1987 with Bernie Sanders. Ms. Lawes has served the City in various capacities since 1973, working first for the Parks Department, but from 1987 to the present has been the Executive Secretary in the Mayor’s Office.

This program includes a brief history about time banking in the United States, as well as the history of time banking in Vermont. The steps to becoming a member of the Burlington Time Bank are included, as well as key concepts for understanding time banking, followed by specific information for navigating the member pages of the Burlington Time Bank web site.

HOPE Congo 08/18/2009

Paul Gatanga and Leontine Lanza speak to the history and atrocities taking place in the Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically in the Oriental Province. The organization both are involved with, Hope Congo, offers brighter possibilities for the future. This program is designed to raise awareness, connect the diaspora community and has been used as a political organizing tool for activists working in Congo who have limited means of self-expression.
