Burlington Wards 4 & 7 NPA Meeting 09/26/2012

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 4 & 7 meet the third Tuesday of the month. Meeting place: Robert E. Miller Community Center 130 Gosse Court.

Our nation has pledged unequivocal support for active duty military service members and veterans. Meeting our obligation to our service members and veterans also means supporting their families. All have made remarkable sacrifices in serving their country, and have both clear and compelling needs as they reintegrate and face the future. Along with peer support and peer counseling, strategies centered on the family are the most urgent and effective approach to supporting the difficult transition to everyday life. Many service members deal with mental health problems attributable to their military experience, and many turn to substance use in response to their pain. Help for service members, veterans, and their families must encompass not only treatment for mental and substance use disorders but also the support elements that sustain recovery—employment, health and well-being, housing, and education. This show will describe the challenges facing those who have served and their families, the support available from both the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and civilian behavioral health systems, and the need to expand family-centered services.

Near & Far Video, Introduced by Richard Kemp: The Road to Recovery: Ready, Willing, and Able To Work: Employment for People in Recovery 08/20/2012

For people in recovery from mental or substance use disorders, employment is often an essential part of the recovery process. Employment increases people’s self-worth, stabilizes their living circumstances, and facilitates their integration with the community. Being unemployed is associated with increased rates of mental disorders and with higher rates of substance use disorders and relapse. In the current job market, employment challenges for people in recovery are greater than ever. This show will explore a range of topics related to meeting those challenges, including skills training, career building, having a “recovery job” that bridges the gap between unemployment and full employment, volunteerism as a pathway to employment, and starting a business. The show will examine the barriers and challenges faced by some people in recovery—those without a high school or college degree, those with a criminal history, and those who have been out of the workforce for a long time. Innovative approaches to addressing the employment issue will be highlighted: recovery entrepreneurship programs, employers who target hiring people in recovery, and recovery community organizations that help with skills training and job placement.

All About Alzheimer's: 2012 Vermont Walk to End Alzheimer's 08/16/2012

Throughout this series the discussion has focussed on the staggering impact of Alzheimer’s disease on families and communities as well as shared resources available throughout Vermont. The Alzheimer’s Association works each day to support all those impacted while continuing to strengthen and build on the resources available – but we can’t do it without you. Today's program focusses on how you can step up and make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s at the 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The Vermont Walk to End Alzheimer's will take place on Sunday, September 23rd at the Shelburne Museum. Vermont Alzheimer's Association Executive Director, Martha Richardson, speaks with Paige Feeser ad Pamela Pare, Co-Chairs for the 2012 Vermont Walk to End Alzheimer's. Paige Feeser is an Education Fellow at Shelburne Museum and an administrator of its Morrnings at the Museum program, which provides specialized tours for members of the Vermont community with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. This is Paige's second year of being a member of Vermont's Walk to End Alzheimer's committee. Pamela Pare is a SASH Coordinator with Cathedral Square and has been working with older adults for approximately 5 years. She is a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Co-Chair of this year's Walk to End Alzheimer's. This will be her 4th year participating in the Vermont Walk

Resources for Hearing Loss - Subtitled Version 08/13/2012

The Hearing Aid Task Force at Disability Rights Vermont hosts this program for people experiencing hearing loss.

Deb Charlea Baker chairs the Hearing Aid Task Force, and serves on the board of Disability Rights Vermont. She is a former board member and vice president of the Hearing Loss Association of America. She serves as an advisor at the Office of Professional Regulations re: hearing aid dispensers. A number of Deb’s family members also have hearing loss, including a grown son who experienced sudden unilateral deafness as a small child. She works as a Communication Consultant and Advocate.

AJ Van Tassel serves on the Hearing aid Task Force and on the State of Vermont Hearing Advisory Council. AJ has dealt with the challenges of hearing loss from a young age.

Kate Russell is a member of the Hearing Aid Task force and the Hearing Loss Association of America. She provided various services to people with hearing loss for the past nine years. Even though her job has changed, she continues to advocate for better services. Kate grew up with a severe bilateral sensorineural hearing loss along with her husband who has hearing loss. They share one daughter who has a mild bilateral hearing loss. All three family members wear hearing aids and use other assistive technology.
