Senator Patrick Leahy: Vermont Funding Increase for Crime Victims 10/09/2015

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and representatives of Vermont organizations that advocate for crime victims announce major grants for Vermont Crime Victim Services and Domestic and Sexual Violence Programs. Leahy, a former prosecutor, has long led in support for crime victims. His bill to strengthen and renew the Violence Against Women Act was signed into law in 2013. He is the top Democratic member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the most senior member of the Appropriations Committee, which funds justice programs.

Vermont will recieve more than $8.7 million from the U.S. Department for Justice to support victims of crime and enhance programs that serve survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Burlington Ward 2 and Ward 3 NPA Meeting 10/08/2015

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to encourage citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies help improve communication between the citizens of Burlington and City government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 2 & 3 meet the second Thursday of the month.

Farm to School Awareness 10/07/2015

Leaders from the Vermont Agencies of Agriculture, Education, & Health join state legislators, Burlington schools superintendent, local school board members, farm to school network leaders, and a 4th/5th grade garden club in celebrating Farm to School Awareness Month at Sustainability Academy in Burlington.

Highlights of this celebratory press event include:

· Announcement of 2016 Vermont Farm to School Grant Request For Proposals (RFP)

· Kale pesto taste test hosted by Sustainability Academy’s 4th and 5th grade garden club (pesto made with kale harvested from the school garden)

· An opportunity for state leadership to join kindergarten and 1st graders for a sit down lunch prepared by Burlington School Food Project

· Overview of Updated Vermont School Wellness Policy Guidelines

· Sharing of New Vermont Farm to School Network Goals

According to Farmers without Borders, regenerative agriculture is any kind of farming that enables the restorative capacity of the earth, improving soil fertility, increasing food production, enhancing vibrant communities and fair economies, and respecting the ecology of the natural world. This lively panel discussion highlights Vermont growers and farmers -- from fruit farmers to dairy and meat farmers and even native tree growers -- who return more to the earth than they take from it. You’ll also learn how you can start to practice restorative agriculture right in your own backyard.

Congressman Peter Welch: Planned Parenthood and Federal Funding 09/16/2015

The Federal Government's fiscal year ends September 30th.
