The House Appropriations Committee takes testimony regarding the Natural Resources portion of Gov. Peter Shumlin's proposed FY12 Budget. Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 4 & 7 meet the third Tuesday of the month. Meeting place: Robert E. Miller Community Center 130 Gosse Court.

Branch Out Burlington presents author, educator and environmentalist Bill McKibben as this year’s winter seminar speaker. His topic will be "Local and Global: Building a Movement to Fight for a Livable Planet."  McKibben writes and speaks frequently on global warming and alternative energy, and advocates for more localized economies in the effort to reverse climate change.  Bill is a scholar in residence at Middlebury College and also a co-founder of 350.org, an international movement dedicated to solving the climate crisis. For more information about Bill McKibben, go to www.billmckibben.com. Branch Out Burlington’s winter seminar is co-sponsored this year by Main Street Landing, the Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program, UVM’s Institute for Global Sustainability and Burlington Department of Parks and Recreation. Branch Out Burlington! (a.k.a. “BOB”) is a local volunteer tree stewardship group, with a commitment to promote the expansion and preservation of our local urban forest, consisting of our greenbelts, parks, yards and all other greenspaces. Our projects include the Burlington Citywide Tree Planting, the Burlington Community Tree Nursery and planting project, our annual Tree Sale, Tree Walk and Awesome Tree Contest, and our ongoing TreeKeeper program. We meet regularly at the Burlington Department of Parks and Recreation offices.
