Artful Word: Gumbo Art Experience Opening at Burlington College 03/26/2010

An innovative and envelope pushing art experience known as GUMBO set to open at Burlington College on March 26, 2010. With the intent to celebrate, challenge, and examine the state of the society, GUMBO includes many artists with differing artistic backgrounds and perspectives.

The show consists of artists working in mediums such as painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, film & video art, and performance art, among others.

Curated by Burlington College Documentary & Photography student Dylan Kelley, GUMBO aims to challenge, inspire, and engage attendees in a discussion of the interconnectivity of ideas regarding art, humanity, and politics.

This community event outlines a re-engagment process on how to achieve the sustainability vision set forth 20 years ago, has the Legacy Steering Committee and staff report on the last 10 years in realizing priority actions set 10 years ago. Jeanne Collins, Superintendent, Burlington School District, receiveds the 'Peter Clavelle Award' for her efforts to help 'improve our economic, social and environmental health for future generations'.

The Chittenden County Historical Society presents "An Irish Program" in the Fletcher Free Library's Community Room. Vince Feeney speaks on "The Irish in Vermont." Bill McKone talks on Civil War Capt. John Lonergan, and the first St. Patrick's Day Celebrations in Burlington. Before, between, and after the talks Cindy Hill (Burlington Irish Heritage Festival) plays some Irish tunes.

The “Winter Gathering” is a special event of ECHO’s permanent exhibit, “INDIGENOUS EXPRESSIONS: Native Peoples of the Lake Champlain,” and is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education through the support of U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy; with additional support from the ECHO Annual Fund, KeyBank, the Vermont Arts Council, and from a 2009 Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership Grant from the Lake Champlain Basin Program.
