Description
James Carroll speaks on Israeli Independence Day (Yom Ha’Atzmaut) about his latest book Jerusalem, Jerusalem: How the Ancient City Ignited Our
Modern World and the prospects for peace in Israel and Palestine. Jerusalem, Jerusalem uncovers the ways in which the ancient city became a transcendent fantasy that ignites religious
fervor unlike anywhere else on earth. That fervor animates American history as much as it does the Middle East, in the present as deeply as in the past.
James Carroll, “one of the most adept and versatile writers on the American scene today” (Denver Post), is the author of ten novels and six works of non-fiction, including the National Book
Award-winning An American Requiem; the New York Times bestselling Constantine’s Sword, now an acclaimed documentary; House of War, which won the first PEN-Galbraith Award;
Practicing Catholic, which Hans Kung calls “brilliantly written, passionate, and vivid.” His most recent book is Jerusalem, Jerusalem, published in Spring 2011.
The A. Pearly and Edith C. Feen Lecture Series was created at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue to honor the memory of A. Pearly Feen, one of Vermont's most outstanding attorneys and legal scholars,
and Edith C. Feen, his wife. The lecture series has had such distinguished guests in the past as Chief Justice Rhenquist of the US Supreme Court and renowned Jewish author Chaim Potok.
