Description

Winds of societal emotion affect parenting behavior.  Dr. Peter Stearns explains how and why we are currently swirling in a storm of anxious parenting, where children are viewed as fragile rather than resilient.  Dr. Stearns is a distinguished historian of parenting and author of Anxious Parents:  A History of Modern Childrearing in America (NYU Press 2003).

The Vermont Center for Family Studies and Hannah's House sponsored the recording of this lecture.  Erik Thomas of the Vermont Center for Family Studies provides an introduction and following the lecture, discusses strageties to help anxious parents.

The Vermont Center for Family Studies provides education and coaching to people interested in learning and practicing "systems thinking." This might include taking action to improve significant relationships and to solve personal and professional relationship challenges. VCFS is part of a national network of centers devoted to the study and teaching of Bowen Family Systems Theory. The theory has applications to various contexts in which humans interact with others.

Hannah’s House, Inc. began its mission of providing therapy for families in July 2010 by sponsoring a new therapist for the Mad River Valley. Nicole Krotinger, LCMHC specializes in counseling children, adolescents and families and incorporates the theoretical practices of  family systems, play, and narrative therapy. During it’s first 18 months, Hannah’s House, Inc. has sponsored workshops, art therapy, agricultural employment, yoga workshops, nutrition seminar, emergency counseling for flood victims, and subsidized therapy for families in need. During the coming year, Hannah’s House, Inc. intends to expand educational programs, fund and stream live webinars, recruit a second family therapist, develop a scholarship program for wilderness therapy,  and add neurofeedback therapy to services offered. Our ultimate goal is to establish a family therapy center in central Vermont, which will incorporate a wide range of therapeutic services.
