Vermont International Film Festival Panel: White Balls on Walls 10/26/2023

The world-renowned Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam allowed a camera behind the scenes of a process that raises uncomfortable and awkward questions.

Can a painting still be entitled “The Prostitutes”? When you appraise art, should you also take the skin color or gender of the artist into account? And how is one to engage with visitors who find all this “too politically correct”?

The film follows the new director of the Stedelijk as he attempts to change the museum’s policies and curation to be more inclusive and progressive. Presented with a slightly tongue-in-cheek tone, filmmaker Sarah Vos takes us into the most private conversations and arguments between the curators and managers. As so many museums around the world, including close to home in Vermont, struggle with how to reassess their collections and curatorial decisions, this film is as timely as it is entertaining. ~OY

Vermont International Film Festival Panel: After The Flood 10/21/2023

Will the flood that caused so much damage in Vermont in July 2023 happen again, and what can be done to mitigate the danger? This special festival event presents a short video from Vermont Public depicting the damage of the flood in the Montpelier area and its impact on residents and business owners, followed by a panel of conservation experts from The Nature Conservancy, exploring what we can do to prevent it in the future.

The Panel is moderated by Eve Frankel, State Director at the Nature Conservancy VT and features panelists Dr. Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux, Vermont State Climatologist and TNC Vermont Advisory Council Member, as well as Lauren Oates, Director of Policy and Governmental Affairs.

On the Waterfront: Interview with Orly Yadin about the Vermont International Film Festival 2022 08/17/2022

Mariah Riggs interviews Orly Yadin from VTIFF.

Orly Yadin, Executive Director of VTIFF since Jan 2012, is a filmmaker and producer of both documentaries and animation films and series. Prior to making films, she was a film researcher on historical programmes and since 2001 has been Managing Director of Footage Farm – an archival footage collection. Orly has also taught documentary film history and theory in universities in England and at Burlington College. In 1995 she co-founded and ran Halo Productions specializing in animation films. Many of Halo’s short films won international awards at festivals, and one, Silence, was shortlisted for the Academy Awards. Orly became a VT resident in 2004 and has been a US citizen since 2010.

This year's festival will take place October 21-30, 2022. Located at the Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center with some virtual options and a satellite venue at The Savoy Theater in Montpelier.
