Celebrate Life: Hemant Ghising 11/18/2022

Hemant holds degrees from the University of Vermont, Tribhuvan University, and University of North Bengal. He has worked in education as an Education Counselor and Assistant Principal. He is a current board member of the Community Health Centers of Burlington and is serving as president of Druk International Shito-Ryu Karate Do Association. He has been awarded the Susan Brody Hasazi Doctoral Dissertation Award, the Outstanding Community Partner Award “CELO Award,” the Quality Leader Award, World Council for Total Quality Excellence in Education, and is a Leadership Training Graduate of Vermont Leadership Institute.

Hemant is a former refugee from Bhutan, and has a family of 5 – him, his spouse, and three boys. His eldest son is now a senior at UVM and the two other boys are in elementary school in the Burlington School District. Hemant's hobbies include photography, hiking, and skiing starting soon. Sports include karate and soccer.

"Refugees have been arriving in Vermont for over forty years. They have helped to transform towns like Burlington and Winooski in multiple ways. But the program has been undergoing profound changes over the past five years – first the deep cuts of the Trump years meant that far fewer people have been arriving, and more recently the program has expanded to new locations (like Brattleboro and Rutland) and to include newer populations (including many Afghans who have arrived this year). Pablo Bose, UVM"s Migration and Urban Studies scholar, speaks to some of the opportunities and challenges as we work to rebuild the refugee program in the US and in Vermont."

Refugee Resettlement Town Hall with Kesha Ram and Marybeth Redmond 10/19/2021

Sen. Kesha Ram Hinsdale and Rep. Marybeth Redmond host a Zoom Town Hall to help our community learn more about refugee resettlement and assisting asylum seekers. The conversation includes an update on the current refugee resettlement programs, Afghan arrivals in Vermont, employer support for refugee workers, and guidance on getting involved in our state’s response. It features introductory remarks from U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy and Congressman Peter Welch, as well as a panel discussion with Tracy Dolan, Director of the State Refugee Office; Amila Merdzanovic, Director of USCRI Vermont; Joe Wiah, Director of the ECDC Multicultural Community Center; and Michele Asch, Vice President of Leadership and Organizational Development at Twincraft Skincare.
