Representative Peter Welch has signed HR 3053 - The Nuclear Waste Amendments Act of 2018 which provides for transporting nuclear waste from all around the United States to a federal facility by road, rail, and waterways through vulnerable communities.

They discuss U.S. Senate companion legislation and the U.S. NRC licensing proceedings regarding centralized interim storage facilities for irradiated nuclear fuel targeted at the Texas/New Mexico borderlands, which are a blatant environmental justice violation. (Large Hispanic communities are already heavily polluted by fossil fuel and nuclear activities.)

The research identifies a meaningful number of samples whose radioactivity increase the risk of suffering future health problems.

FOCUS: Dakota Pipeline and Geprag's Park Vermont Protests Unify 11/02/2016

Channel 17 host Margaret Harrington gets together with Kevin Kamps, of Beyond Nuclear, Jane Palmer, of Rising Tide, Vermont, and Dr. Rachel Smolker, of Protect Geprag's Park, to talk about the unification of the Dakota Oil Access Pipeline Protest with the Fracked Gas Pipeline Protest in Addison County, Vermont. The activists emphasize the main similarity, which is that corporate interests take precedence over the needs and wishes of the people and the environment. Elected officials and those running for office are noncommittal. President Obama states he will wait to see how the Dakota Pipeline plays out while 140 Native American protesters are arrested and caged by law enforcement officers from seven states. Meanwhile, the Bundy Clan, who took over federal land by armed violence, have been acquitted by a federal jury.

Nuclear Free Future: Children Suffer Nuclear Impact Worldwide 04/29/2016

Maggie Gundersen, Chiho Kaneko, and Caroline Phillips of Fairewinds Energy Education discuss the nuclear risk concerns for children not only near the nuclear disaster sites of Fukushima-Dai-ichiin Japan and Chernobyl in Ukraine, formerly the Soviet Union, but globally where areas near all nuclear power plants are contaminated with radiation. Since mothers in Japan especially bear the responsibility to protect children, they experience greater hardships in an environment where just expressing one’s concern about radiation is seen as a treasonous act. Even 30 years later, the Belarus government recognizes the merits of relocating children away from radiation contaminated areas but the children of Japan are socially forced to stay put in highly contaminated areas.
