An eclipse is as much a socio-cultural phenomenon as it is a natural one. From portents of evil and chaos to causes for celebration or consumer marketing opportunities, the cultural meanings of eclipses have varied widely across time and place, reflecting variations of world view and religion, celestial knowledge, social relationships, and preoccupations of the moment. In this engaging lecture, UVM environmental anthropologist and professor, Luis Vivanco, explores the powerful role of cultural meaning and social context in shaping human experiences of eclipse.

A rally, march, and “tree theater” in support of protections for Climate Forests like Telephone Gap and against false climate solutions like biomass electricity!

The momentum is building to #SavePublicForests for the climate, biodiversity, and clean water. Last fall, over 100 activists from across Vermont and New England rallied at the Rochester Ranger Station of the Green Mountain National Forest in defense of #ClimateForests like Telephone Gap, where the Forest Service proposes 12,000 acres of reckless logging in some of Vermont’s oldest forests.

Join us for a rally and march to send a loud and clear message to the US Forest Service and the Biden Administration that our public forests are #WorthMoreStanding!

Mary Olson, Director of the Southeast Office of the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, talks about the greater danger faced by women and girls exposed to ionizing nuclear radiation. This includes trans-generational DNA damage. An expert in highly radioactive spent fuel policy, she discusses the dangers of transporting nuclear waste from nuclear power reactors and nuclear weapons facilities.

Mary Olson’s research and activism is a driving force for the Treaty to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. This Nuclear Free Future conversation takes heed of this topic 73 years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, 1945.
