Press Conference - Senator Peter Welch

The Vermont Department of Public Service is working with an outside consultant to develop and write a Telecommunications Plan that meets new requirements set forth by Act 79 (2019), an act relating to broadband deployment throughout Vermont, and 30 V.S.A. § 202d, as amended by Act 137 (2020), an act relating to COVID-19 funding and assistance for broadband connectivity, housing, and economic relief. 

Two important public input sessions occurred on March 31st and April 1st, hosted by the Vermont Department of Public Service. Each session was an opportunity to raise questions and provide feedback about topics related to Vermont’s telecommunications future — who has access, how much it will cost, and if it meets community needs and interests. 

In this session, the focus is on Cell Service, Public Safety, and Public Access Television.

Annette Smith, of Vermonters for a Clean Environment, joins by phone host Michael Bielawski to discuss the new "Broadband Bill" signed by Governor Phil Scott. Critics are saying it's also a WiFi bill and the latest WiFi technology has a suspect health record in terms of radiation, etc.

Host Lauren-Glenn Davitian speaks with Sharon Combes-Farr, Project Director with the Vermont Digital Economy Project, on the organizations goals and their upcoming conference, September 23. 

VCRD’s Vermont Digital Economy Project will be hosting a conference on September 23rd at the Montpelier State House, called “Vermont Connected: Envisioning the Future of Vermont’s Digital Economy.”

The conference, which will be opened by Governor Peter Shumlin, will involve a variety of sessions. In the morning, speakers will share their ideas, experiences, and stories in short 10-minute increments. These talks will be followed by teaching workshops, where conference participants will have the opportunity to dive more deeply into a particular area of interest, and learn some hard and fast skills. The afternoon will focus on the future of Vermont’s digital economy, where conference attendees will formulate ideas for the future and craft policy suggestions.

The Vermont Connected conference will focus on four tracks: Educating for a Digital World, Building Effective Organizations, Creating Resilient Communities, and Steering Vermont’s Digital Future. There will be multiple sessions in each track.
