Senator Peter Welch: Implications of New Law Allowing Medicare Negotiation for Prescription Drugs 09/06/2023

On Wednesday, September 6, Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) joins Families USA and Patients for Affordable Drugs for a virtual press conference to break down and discuss the future impact and implications for the Biden administration’s recent announcement of the first ten drugs selected for Medicare price negotiation - a vital component of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Experts are available to answer questions or provide context.

Senator Welch, a critical voice on drug price reforms, was a champion of the IRA when he voted for it in the House of Representatives. As a Senator, he has led legislation to build on the success of the IRA and empower HHS to negotiate for even more prescription drugs in Medicare Part D. He discusses why this is a crucial inflection point for Congress: to see the law implemented as intended, and to protect families whose health and wallets have hung in the balance for far too long - mainly because big drug companies are putting profits before people’s health.

Burlington Free University: Miro's Metropolis - Alternate Visions for Burlington 12/03/2015

Local activists Marc Estrin, Amey Radcliffe, Ibnar Avilix, and Jan Schultz provide perspectives on alternate visions for Burlington as a follow up to the series developed on Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger's approach to development in the city.  Ibnar Avilix is a community actionist, co-founder: Savo Open Space-Burlington, co-founder of the South End Alliance, co-founder of Safe Streets Burlington, member of the Super Alliance, a growing alliance of grassroots community groups in and around Burlington.  Also, a member of the Vermont Sail Freight Project core team and core member of the development team for the New Maine Sail Freight system.  Ibnar also works with Pathways Vermont for the new Soteria Program. (Soteria operates with the belief that psychosis can be a temporary experience that one works through rather than a chronic mental illness that needs to be managed.)

Governor Peter Shumlin: Education Bill Act 46 11/10/2015

Six months after signing the historic education reform law known as Act 46, Gov. Peter Shumlin highlights its early success in sparking local conversations statewide about how to enhance educational quality for Vermont’s kids. The Governor makes the announcement at Essex High School a week after voters from the towns of Essex, Essex Junction, and Westford voted to streamline their governance structure, forming one unified district to serve 10 schools in the three communities. The unification was the first under Act 46 and reduces the number of schoolboards from five to one and superintendents from two to one.

The Governor is joined for the announcement by House Speaker Shap Smith, Chairman of the House Education Committee Dave Sharpe, Essex Rep. Tim Jerman, Education Secretary Rebecca Holcombe, local schoolboard chair Kim Gleason, Superintendents Mark Andrews and Judith DeNova, students, and others.
