Great Success! CCTV 25th Anniversary Screening on 4/30

May 01, 2009

One hundred and fifty free speech lovers turned out Thursday night to CCTV's 25th Anniversary Retrospective and Free Speech Art Auction. "This is the best party I've been to all year", exulted Roz Payne, long-time activist and media maker. Order your copy today.

Segments from the program include the CCTV 1984 Premiere and Winooski by Dan Higgins Trailer. The entire event will air on Channel 17 and may be purchased at http://www.cctv.org/watch-tv/programs/cctv-25th-anniversary-video-screening-free-speech-art-auction

Producers, volunteers, public access organizers and friends were treated to a 90 minute retrospective that started in Winoosk in 1984 and celebrated long time residents, key events, Vermont (and national) politicians and media makers, protesters and government officials.  Lauren-Glenn Davitian, CCTV Executive Director, opened the event with a look back at 1984:

"When CCTV started in 1984 we were squarely in the analog age with little understanding of the major changes that were ahead of all of us.  Ronald Reagan was president. Richard Snelling was governor (for the first time). Burlington was just barely a three party city."

Guest hosts included Dan Higgins, John Franco, Richard Kemp, Melinda Moulton, Ginny Lyons, Bob Davis and Oak Logalbo, with a special appearance by the Taiko Drummers and the Vermont Workers Center.

In his introduction to the Vermont Politicians segment, Philip Fiermonte offered: "To see what has been accomplished in the last 25 years is nothing short of remarkable. We owe a debt of gratitude to L-G and Nat and all the current and former staff and board members and volunteers who have led the successful effort for quality public access television." See complete comments here.

The event also featured 14 pieces of free speech art contributed by local artists in a variety of mediums. "Free speech art is alive and well from Harry Bliss to Mark Awodey and pieces inspired directly by public access TV." reported auction and event organizer Megan Humphrey.

"This CCTV celebration is fantastic," said Bruce Siefer summing up the comments of so many of event guests, "it reminds us of why we have worked so hard to build communities worth living in! Thanks again for playing an integral role in Burlington's evolution."

CCTV continues its silver anniversary festivities on Saturday, June 13th with a Gala Free Speech Celebration at the Burlington Boathouse--from 6 - 9pm. For more information contact Kathleen Swanson at 802.862.1645 x19 or kathleen [at] cctv [dot] org  RSVP here.
