Senator Patrick Leahy: New Broadband Infrastructure To Help Facilitate Lake Research Between Universities 10/28/2010

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, University of Vermont President Daniel Fogel, representatives of Vermont’s EPSCoR program, and representatives of TelJet Longhaul announce a multi-million dollar federal investment in fiber optic technology increasing interstate research opportunities for universities in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island and Delaware. The new infrastructure will enable a multi-state research and development project to get underway studying complex and detailed information about northeastern lakes, including Lake Champlain.

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. The e-Vermont Community Broadband Project is a two-year initiative to help rural Vermont towns take full advantage of the Internet to create jobs, drive school innovation, provide social services, and increase civic involvement. Paul Costello, Executive Director of the Vt Council on Rural Development and Helen Labun Jordan, Project Director of e-Vermont, join Steve Gold for this roundtable discussion. Twelve towns are already selected, and other towns have until November 17 to apply for selection in the final round.
