Richard Thomas Kemp passed away on September 28, 2021. Burlington's First Unitarian Universalist Society holds a ceremony to celebrate his life.

Celebrate Life: Stirling Peebles 06/17/2022

Five words: Determined, Hard worker, Funny, Researcher, Successful

Stirling Peebles, was a former Think College Vermont student. Stirling was hired at The Center on Disability and Community Inclusion as the Think College Vermont Dissemination Assistant in 2014. In the same year, she became an official member of the National Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE). In 2015, she also became a board member of the Vermont APSE chapter as well. Stirling also works for Green Mountain Self-Advocates. Stirling completed the Human Resource Management Certificate Program at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. She had a 4.0 GPA at Champlain College. Stirling has been recognized by the Vermont Business Magazine as a 2016 Rising Star.

Stirling also serves on the Governor's Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities. In 2019-2020 she was a Self-Advocate Fellow in the University of Vermont Leadership Education and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program. In 2019, the Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE) awarded Stirling the APSE Lois Curtis Award. This award recognizes an individual’s personal achievement in advocating for inclusive, individualized, community-based employment and/or independent living.

To celebrate Winooski's Centennial, Dan Higgins (well-known photographer and long-time Winooski resident) has graciously created a special book featuring a curated selection of photographs from Winooski’s 100-year history. Dan shares his collection of photographs at the Centennial Celebration in Rotary Park.

“The images in this book cover the years 1922-2022. Show the book around. Ask someone you don’t know if they can tell you something about one of the photographs. Anyone you encounter in Winooski should be able to recognize at least one image they can tell you something about. What makes a community is not just its collection of stories, but how much sharing there is among residents of those stories. More Than A Market: Food, Community and Family in the Markets of Burlington and Winooski 05/25/2022

From Champlain College:

For generations, neighborhood groceries, bakeries, and butcher shops have formed the heart of Burlington and Winooski's communities. From the mid-1800s to mid-1900s, French Canadian, Italian, Irish, Lebanese, Jewish, and German markets were concentrated in Burlington's Old North End and Lakeside neighborhoods and near the mills in Winooski. Since the 1980s, immigrants from Vietnam, Bosnia, Bhutan, and Eastern and Western Africa have carried on this entrepreneurial tradition. Learn more about the vibrant role these neighborhood markets have played at Champlain College's Local History Event, featuring a talk by Charlotte Barrett titled "More Than A Market: Food, Community and Family in the Markets of Burlington and Winooski, Vermont."

Celebrate Life: Ali Dieng 05/13/2022

Ali Dieng: life long learner, passionate, dedicated community leader striving for equity and justice.

Ali Dieng is the Building Bright Futures Regional Manager supporting the Chittenden, Central Vermontand Franklin and Grand Isle regions. Ali is the founder and former Manager of the Burlington School District Parent University Program where he engaged parents, educators and community partners. Ali is committed to building more equitable and accessible systems and brings his expertise engaging diverse perspectives; especially those from different socio economic & cultural backgrounds. Ali is the co-founder of the Vermont New Americans Advisory Council VNAAC, an organization working to increase civic engagement and a sense of belonging among the New American population. Ali is a third time elected Burlington City Councilor and the chair of the Racial Equity Inclusion and Belonging Committee REIB for the City of Burlington. He resides in Burlington with his wife, Angela, and their two daughters.

Celebrate Life: Rosanne Greco - Part 2 04/29/2022

Rosanne, in 5 words: Caring, Committed, Concerned, Critical, Enviornmentalist

Bio:

"Rosanne Greco was born in Scranton, PA to a coal miner father and garment factory worker mother. She entered the convent at age 12, and was a novice in the Sisters of Christian Charity when she left six and a half years later. She worked her way through college, and graduated with a BA in Psychology from Newark State College (now Kean College) in Union, NJ. She joined the U.S. Air Force in 1973 and served in five foreign countries and six U.S. states. She was an intelligence officer specializing in strategic nuclear weapons and arms control negotiations. She retired in 2003 as a full Colonel.

Rosanne moved to Vermont in 2008 and was elected to the South Burlington City Council in 2011. She was elected Chair of the City Council in 2012. After deciding in 2014 not to run again for political office, she has devoted her time to climate activism and other social justice issues. Rosanne has an MS in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Nebraska, and has completed all course work for a PhD in International Relations from the University of Maryland. She married for the first time at age 57, and is living with her loving husband in a big yellow house in South Burlington, Vermont along with their adopted dog, Jamie."
