Nuclear Free Future: Nobel Peace Prize 2017 - International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons 10/09/2017

Host Margaret Harrington reads the letter to supporters from the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on their winning the Nobel Peace Prize. The nine nations who have nuclear weapons have not signed the treaty to abolish nuclear weapons. They are the United States, China, Russia, Great Britain, France, India, Israel, Pakistan, and North Korea. ICAN modeled their campaign on the International Campaign to Ban Landmines which with its American Coordinator, Jody Williams, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. Jody Williams speaks in Vermont at the first statewide Nuclear Disarmament Day observed on August 6th, the day the United States bombed Hiroshima.

Larner College of Medicine at UVM: Imbasciani Lecture: Incorporating Transgender Care into Everyday Primary Care 10/04/2017

Trans 101, creating a welcoming environment of care, hormone therapy and its impact on health and medical monitoring were among the areas touched on by national LGBTQ health expert Henry Ng, M.D., M.P.H., during the Larner College of Medicine's 4th annual Vito Imbasciani, Ph.D., M.D.’85 and George DiSalvo LGBTQ Health Equity Lecture on “Incorporating Transgender Care into Everyday Primary Care” on October 4.

Ng's talk was hosted by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.

The chair of the Department of Internal Medicine/Pediatrics at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, Ng is also an associate professor and assistant dean for admissions at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his medical degree at Michigan State University, followed by a residency and chief residency in internal medicine/pediatrics at MetroHealth and joined the Case Western faculty in 2006. In 2012, he completed a master’s degree in public health at Case Western, with an emphasis on health promotion/disease prevention for LGBT populations. In addition to his leadership role with the GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality (formerly the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association), Ng has been actively involved in medical education and mentorship. His clinical and academic work focuses on delivering culturally and clinically competent care to medically vulnerable populations. In 2007, he co-founded and has since served as the clinical director of the PRIDE Clinic, Ohio’s first medical home for LGBT patients. Ng’s academic interests focus on LGBT health, health disparities and public/population health. He is an associate editor for the journal LGBT Health and has directed the LGBT clinical elective “PRIDE Clinic” at CWRU School of Medicine since 2008. Ng has received a number of community and academic awards, including the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award (2009), the Cleveland Human Rights Campaign Leadership Award (2013), and the Gender Equity Award (2016). He has also served on the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

UVM Community Medical School: Lyme Disease - Big, Bad Borrelia burgdorferi & the Tiny Tick 10/03/2017

Northeasterners have likely experienced the sharp pang of dread associated with finding a tick embedded in their skin. Unfortunately, for many bitten by a Borrelia burgdorferi-infected tick, that dread can lead to fever, leg and arm weakness, facial paralysis, or short-term memory loss. Learn about the details of Lyme disease in Vermont, the body's immune response to Lyme, the manifestation of arthritis in Lyme patients, antibiotic resistance, and research designed to support and improve education and prevention practices.

Panelists include staff from the Vermont Department of Health and the Vermont Center for Immunology & Infectious Diseases, as well as a CDC Lyme Corps member.

Burlington Ward 4 and Ward 7 NPA Meeting 09/27/2017

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 4 & 7 meet the fourth Wednesday of the month.
