Burlington Receives Two National Service Grants for Service Positions in the Community 09/21/2010

Burlington is fortunate to be one of the beneficiaries of President Obama’s new efforts to grow volunteerism and service as one means foraddressing people’s needs, in particular during the economic downtown. Burlington’s Center for community and Neighborhoods has received 2 distinct grant awards to infuse the community with 40 diverse AmeriCorps and VISTA organizers who will serve in government, schools and non-profit agencies. The newly passed National Service Act will support a new wave of service and civic action to help tackle the nation’s toughest challenges. This renewed effort is evidenced in Burlington where over 300 individuals applied to compete for the 40 year-long service positions in the community.

Sleight-of-Hand Magic offers a unique experience that is fun, baffling and truly magical. Christopher uses pure sleight-of-hand methods, rather than secret mechanical devices, to create mind-boggling illusions that are fully polished and expertly presented. His mastery of classic and original technique is demonstrated with playing cards and coins. It has taken many years to perfect his art. He started performing mostly for children’s parties in 1974 at the age of 11, and since 1997, he has made a career of his art performing exclusively for adults and older audiences.

August 5–8, 2010 Festival of Fools is a curated festival of street theater devoted to community engagement through the celebration of circus arts, music and comedy for family audiences. The festival features the best international street performers from around the globe. Audiences of all ages will feast their eyes on some of the zaniest comic performers as downtown Burlington becomes an epicenter for laughter and spirited entertainment! Four main stage locations on the Church Street Marketplace and in City Hall Park.
