Cris Ericson explains how your paycheck has federal taxes deducted and they go to the IRS, and then the U.S. Congress votes to give your tax dollars to the NIH, the Pentagon, and huge corporations as subsidies. Your tax dollars are used to make products like prescription drugs and defense products and microchips, which are sold worldwide for billions of dollars in profits for the pharmaceutical corporations, the defense corporations, and the multi-nation mega corporations - who are all making their profits based on the fact that the United States Congress voted to give them YOUR hard earned tax dollars, BUT YOU ARE NOT GETTING A SHARE OF THE PROFITS, you are getting no return on investment of your tax dollars. THIS HAS TO STOP.

Election season is around the corner! Vermont's Primary Election is on Tuesday, August 13th, and the General Election is on Tuesday, November 5th. Town Meeting TV has the coverage you need to cast an informed ballot.

The offices to be elected in 2024 include:

• At the federal level:
  • President and Vice President,
  • One of Vermont's two U.S. Senate seats for a 6-year term
  • Our Congress person in the U.S. House of Representatives for a 2-year term,
• And in Vermont state government:
  • Governor,
  • Lieutenant Governor,
  • Attorney General,
  • all (30) State Senate seats,
  • all (150) State Representative seats,
• And many more.

You can only cast a vote for ONE party in the primary on August 13th, but you do not have to be a registered member of that party to vote. Absentee ballots for the statewide primary will be available for request on June 29th. You can request your mail-in ballot online at Vermont's My Voter Page (mvp.vermont.gov), or at your town Clerk's office.

Absentee ballots for the November 5, 2024, general election will be automatically mailed to all active registered voters, no later than October 1, 2024.

Before you vote, you can hear directly from the candidates by watching candidate forums and other election coverage on Town Meeting TV. We will host candidate forums for contested elections in the primary, and then we'll invite all candidates, including uncontested races, running in Burlington, South Burlington, Winooski, Williston, Essex, Essex Junction, and Colchester for the General Election in November. Our live candidate forums give you the opportunity to call in and ask a question directly to the candidates. So check the schedule, tune in, and call in!

The summer door-to-door canvass has been at the heart of VPIRG’s work since 1985, the first year a small group of passionate young activists took to the streets, roads, and mountain tracks of Vermont and began a political movement through the simple act of having face-to-face conversations.  But even before the first canvass, since our founding in 1972, VPIRG’s work has been rooted in the idea that when we make the effort to connect with people and build a movement around a common issue, we can accomplish big things – together.

Over the last several decades, our summer canvass has grown to become a beloved Vermont summer tradition. What once was an operation comprised of 10-20 canvassers knocking on doors in and around Chittenden County, has become a force of 70+ canvassers each summer that walk, bike, and talk to residents in all 251 cities, towns, and gores in Vermont. And the conversations we have each year inform the work our team of advocates goes on to do in the State House.
