The Lost Mural has been successfully cleaned in 2021 with layers of varnish, charcoal dust and dirt having been removed. Half the funds have been raised for the final phase of the full restoration of the Lost Mural and the project needs $75,000 more this year to complete this work in 2022. You can see all the details at lostmural.org, including information about the Lost Mural, the artist named Ben Zion Black, the history of Burlington’s “Little Jerusalem,” the history of Burlington’s three synagogues, and the timeline of the Lost Mural Project. The website includes photos and videos of the 2013-2015 stabilization, as well as the miraculous move and successful reinstallation in May, 2015 and the dazzling cleaning results from this summer 2021.
The Lost Mural Project is being completed with museum quality documentation, archival photos and videos, which it is sharing with state, national and international museums all over the world. It has partnered with many groups, including local schools, universities, and Jewish museums in the United States, Israel and Lithuania. The preservation, conservation and restoration of the Lost Mural is being assisted by many of Vermont’s historic preservation groups: Preservation Burlington, Preservation Trust of Vermont, the VT Arts Council, VT Humanities Council, Vermont Dept of Historic Preservation, VT Community Foundation , Vermont Historical Society, and Historic New England, as well as guidance, publicity and/or testimonials from the National Museum of American Jewish History (PA), the Smithsonian Institution (DC) and the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington, DC, and the International Survey of Jewish Art & Monuments.
