Peace Talks: A Postcolonial Approach to Acculturation: The American Dream Re-visioned 03/17/2023

This episode focuses on how we can change our approach towards acculturation from an “assimilation” based system to an “integration” based system that respects the cultural heritage and dignity of immigrants entering the United States. We meet with Tamara Parks, who has been a teacher and principal for nearly a decade, and is currently serving as the Director of the Multilingual program through the Essex Westford School District (EWSD). We will be exploring Tamara’s journey as a first generation immigrant to the United States, herself, and how that experience has informed her work in the public education system. We will be discussing a range of peacebuilding topics, such as postcolonialism, multiculturalism, and building peace through inclusive practices that promote equity and understanding across cultures and communities.

Dr. Julieta Rushford Santiago was born and raised in Puerto Rico. At the age of 17 she graduated high school and pursued higher education in the United States. She has a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and earned her Doctorate degree in Chiropractic from Life University, Marietta, GA, in 1994.

Dr. Julieta has over 30 years of experience in Network Spinal Analysis;

She is a Certified Aromatherapist and a Trauma Informed Care Practitioner

Dr. Rushford lives in Williston, with her husband, Dr. Matt Rushford.

Together they have one son, Storm, who is currently in college.

He is an entrepreneur, an advocate for social change, and the Founder of Know Your Force — a startup business that provides police departments with a community feedback tool that better informs police departments about their engagements with the public. We discuss peacebuilding topics that cover collective impact and shared value through socially responsive business ventures, as well as conflict transformation through mediative processes, dialogue, and trust building.

This paid media internship opportunity is designed for youth aged 16-20 who are eager to gain professional experience in the audio-visual field and develop a deeper understanding of their local community.
