Community Action Day at Champlain Street Park 04/19/2023

The Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO) hosts Community Action Day to help revitalize Champlain Street Park, one of the few remaining public green spaces in Burlington’s South End neighborhood. The event offers the community an opportunity to come together in recognition of Earth Day and Fair Housing Month.

Community members come together to hear about how housing security and community agency in the spaces they live contribute to thriving, inclusive communities. Fair Housing Project team members share a brief introduction to Fair Housing Month, and highlight other Fair Housing Month community conversations and activities for people to plug into. Participants enjoy lunch, conversations about housing inclusion, and help clean up the park. HeART & Home Kits are available as well! Join us for this moment of caring for this community space.

I am the eldest son of an Italian American working class family raised in The Bronx, New York. After 12 years of parochial Catholic education, I attended the City University of New York, where I discovered the anti-war movement was more important than pre-med study and became a history major.

Discovery is my operative word: salesman, customer service, schoolteacher, window washer (40 story buildings), food cooperative manager, health care advocate/director, union organizer, electoral campaign worker/manager , city council staff, mediator, therapist, leadership development/coaching practice, entrepreneur. Throughout my life, my father, who lived to almost 100, would ask me, “what are you doing now, how do I describe your work to the family?”

The joy of three adult daughters, their families & offspring, currently 4 grandsons ages 2 months to 6 years living close by is a joy.

The crux of the matter is that new, affordable homes need to be built for younger, more diverse populations, but not at the expense of existing Vermont communities or the environment. Conventional approaches to development have struggled to address these issues because of the complex dynamic systems at play. Economic, social, and environmental interests all overlap in contradictory ways when it comes to housing. But what if there was a way to address these overlapping interests and needs by shifting our focus from home construction to industrial revolution? Skywatch is hosted by Jimmy Leas and Danaka Katovich. Jimmy has been working to stop the F-35 in Burlington since the plan to base it here was first announced in 2010. He publishes CancelF35.substack.com. Danaka is the national co-director of Code Pink, and she is working to ground the F-35 nationally and internationally.

Town Meeting TV is excited to announce that applications are now open for the Spring 2025 cohort of the Neighborhood Community Media Internship program. Join up to 8 other youth to engage in interesting media making projects! This paid media internship opportunity is designed for youth aged 16-20 who are eager to gain professional experience in the audio-visual field and develop a deeper understanding of their local community. The group will meet under the leadership of Town Meeting TV's Travis Washington from the end of January 2025 to the beginning of June 2025, on a schedule agreed upon by the whole cohort.
