UVM Community Medical School: Lyme Disease - Big, Bad Borrelia burgdorferi & the Tiny Tick 10/03/2017

Northeasterners have likely experienced the sharp pang of dread associated with finding a tick embedded in their skin. Unfortunately, for many bitten by a Borrelia burgdorferi-infected tick, that dread can lead to fever, leg and arm weakness, facial paralysis, or short-term memory loss. Learn about the details of Lyme disease in Vermont, the body's immune response to Lyme, the manifestation of arthritis in Lyme patients, antibiotic resistance, and research designed to support and improve education and prevention practices.

Panelists include staff from the Vermont Department of Health and the Vermont Center for Immunology & Infectious Diseases, as well as a CDC Lyme Corps member.

As of January 15, 2017 all Vermont patients are legally required to be informed of their breast density, but now that patients know their breast density, what should they do with this information? Learn how a woman's breast density category affects her risk of developing breast cancer and how radiologists can detect it on mammography. Find out what you can do to improve the odds of a cancer being detected early, when treatable. The pros and cons of additional screening methods will be discussed to help patients make better-informed choices. Senator Patrick Leahy: Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet 09/02/2015

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), welcomes Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet to Vermont for a Peace Corps recruitment event for students at UVM, Middlebury College and Saint Michael’s College. The event highlights UVM’s Peace Corps Prep Program, which was established to offer more targeted and skill-building opportunities to undergraduate students interested in serving in the Peace Corps or in other international development and service organizations.

The event also features remarks by Peace Corps volunteer Taylor Dorn of Essex Junction, who will appear via Skype from Panama.

Vermont is the top-ranked Peace Corps Volunteer-producing state in the nation on a per capita basis. UVM ranked 7th nationally among medium size schools, with 25 alumni currently serving around the world. Among small schools nationally, Middlebury College ranked 3rd and Saint Michael’s College ranked 20th, with 16 and 9 volunteers respectively.

Leahy long has championed the Peace Corps and for more than two decades has headed the Senate panel that funds its annual budget. Leahy currently is the Ranking Member of the State Department and Foreign Operations Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee.
