Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebrations: Keynote Speaker Ilyasah Shabazz 01/17/2016

The Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center hosts keynote speaker Ilyasah Shabazz, civil rights activist, author, and third daughter of Malcolm X, delivers the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day keynote address. Ms. Shabazz is known for her memoir, Growing up X, for which she won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Nonfiction Literary Work.

At the event, the Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center honors this year’s recipients of the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award: Jan Demers, Executive Director of the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO), for her work helping homeless and economically disadvantaged community members; and Jay Diaz, Public Advocate for the ACLU of Vermont, for his untiring work to promote stability, access, and equal opportunity to low income Vermont children.

Rally for Love and Unity (Let's Not Let Trump's Hate Divide Our Community) 01/07/2016

Donald Trump's visit to Burlington, VT spurs this counter celebration of the new 1Love Initiative for Racial Justice & Safe Communities across the street from where candidate Trump will speak. Community leaders and members share and learn about current initiatives for more just communities and celebrate the work we need to build an independent political movement for change. This event is coordinated by Rights & Democracy VT, with participation of groups involved with the 1Love Initiative and others working for more just communities to share their work including, Peace & Justice Center, Vermont Interfaith Action, Vermont Workers' Center, Justie For All, Champlain Area NAACP, Vermonters For Criminal Justice Reform and Justicia Migrante Migrant Justice. Trumping the Race Card - Rodney Patterson 11/16/2015

Rodney Patterson, Author of the recently released 'Trumping the Race Card - A National Agenda: Moving Beyond Race and Racism' speaks to the evolution of his writing this book, and how the solutions offered might help nationally and locally.

The Burlington Peace & Justice Center presents a Participatory Reading of Frederick Douglass’ “The Meaning of the 4th of July for the Negro" on the 163rd anniversary (July 5, 1852) at Burlington City Hall. As a community event, they invite you to reconsider the meaning of freedom and racial justice through a historical lens as we celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. Copies of the speech will be provided and audience members are encouraged to partake in the shared reading of this influential speech.

Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebrations: Burlington Rally and March - "Black Lives Matter" 01/19/2015

This rally is being held in celebration of Martin Luther King Day and in remembrance of where we have been to emphasize where we are today (in the context of history) and what we need to do in this moment and the tomorrow's to come to accomplish that dream. This rally is also being held to show continued support for Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Darrien Hunt, Eric Garner, etc., to DENOUNCE our racist INjustice system, and to address the static state of racism in this country.Be prepared to hear truth spoken by Vermonters of color. This is a peaceful demonstration.

Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebrations: Burlington Martin Luther King Celebration with Donisha Marley Prendergast 01/19/2015

The Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center hosts poet Donisha Marley Prendergast, granddaughter of Bob and Rita Marley is joined by Jasmine Rand, a University of Vermont graduate and civil rights attorney who represented Trayvon Martin's family. The Greater Burlington Multicultural Resource Center's Executive Director Patrick Brown, said that Ms. Rand coined the term 'I am Trayvon Martin', used by supporters of the 17-year old who was shot and killed in Florida in 2012.

Summer Video Production Internship - Applications Open

Town Meeting TV is hiring two paid interns to join our production team for the summer! The program will run from Monday, June 24th until Friday, August 16th (8 weeks). $17 an hour, approximately 8 hours per week. We are looking for folks who have basic or intermediate experience with video recording and editing on Adobe Premiere. Interns will work with the Town Meeting TV Co-Directors to pick stories or events that they would like to cover in our community, practice outreach skills, then shoot and edit video that will be broadcasted on Town Meeting TV's YouTube and cable channels. Interested applicants should send their resume and cover letter (including why they are interested in this position and any relevant experience) to Jordan at jmitchell@cctv.org.
