Windows and Mirrors: Why Representation Matters in Children's Books 04/29/2019

The concept of "windows and mirrors" means that children’s literature should contain diverse characters and experiences so that all children can find representations of their own experiences and identities (“mirrors”) and be exposed to many experiences and identities of people unlike themselves (“windows”).

Channel 17's Barrie Silver is joined by Elizabeth Bluemle, picture book author and owner of The Flying Pig Bookstore; Kekla Magoon, author of social justice-themed books for children and young adults; and Christie Beveridge Howell, Director of Diversity and Inclusion and chair of the English department at the Vermont Commons School, to discuss "windows and mirrors" and the importance of diversity in children's literature.

#BlackLivesMatter in the Trump Era 02/23/2017

Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor writes on black politics, social movements, and racial inequality in the United States. She is an assistant professor in the African American Studies department at Princeton University. According to Taylor, the Black Lives Matter movement has awakened a new generation of activists.

In her recent book, "From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation," she offers a stirring and insightful analysis of the historical and contemporary ravages of racism and persistence of structural inequality, such as mass incarceration and Black unemployment. She argues that this new struggle against police violence holds the potential to reignite a broader push for Black liberation.

This is part of the Will Miller Social Justice Lecture Series.

Persistence of Slavery in Early Vermont 03/14/2013

University of Vermont professor Harvey Amani Whitfield discusses the tensions between slavery and freedom in early Vermont history. His research indicates that the end of slavery in Vermont was messy, disorderly, and contradictory and that various forms of bondage persisted in Vermont well after the 1777 abolition of adult slavery.

Professor Whitfield’s areas of research are the black population in the Maritime colonies and Vermont. In 2006, he published Blacks on the Border: The Black Refugees in British North America, 1815-1860. His article, “African Americans in Burlington, Vermont, 1880-1900,” was published in Vermont History in 2007.

Summer Video Production Internship - Applications Open

Town Meeting TV is hiring two paid interns to join our production team for the summer! The program will run from Monday, June 24th until Friday, August 16th (8 weeks). $17 an hour, approximately 8 hours per week. We are looking for folks who have basic or intermediate experience with video recording and editing on Adobe Premiere. Interns will work with the Town Meeting TV Co-Directors to pick stories or events that they would like to cover in our community, practice outreach skills, then shoot and edit video that will be broadcasted on Town Meeting TV's YouTube and cable channels.
