Memorial Day Commemoration 2021 05/31/2021

This Memorial Day, the commemoration hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 782 is a little different: While the tradition of honoring and remembering members of the United States military who died serving the country remains unchanged, this year the VFW and City of Burlington also pauses to remember those in the community lost during the pandemic.

The VFW sets up a field of flags to honor each person who passed away from COVID-19 in the City so far, along with two trumpet solos, remarks from the Post Commander, Mayor, and a leader from the Vermont National Guard. The Vermont Guard has stepped forward in such an incredible way throughout this pandemic. The ceremony concludes with taps.

Vermont Peace Conference 2018: The Impacts of US Militarism in Okinawa and Forewarning Regarding the F-35 05/12/2018

Adrienne shares her report back from a recent Veterans For Peace US delegation to Okinawa. There, she and fellow VFP US members joined VFP Okinawa and VFP Japan members to learn more about the impacts of US militarism on the island and show solidarity to the Okinawan resistance. We also learned about Okinawan history, and current movements to oppose the growing US military presence.

While Okinawa comprises just 0.6% of the land that is Japan, over 62% of US military bases are located there with great cost to the Okinawan people. These impacts have included environmental damage, noise pollution, threats to the waters and bays around Okinawa, disruption of their culture and society, and possible eradication of an endangered species, the Okinawan dugong.

Learn more about the movement of the Okinawan people, which also includes opposing the increasing presence of US military aircraft flying over the island, which has been fraught with countless accidents over the years – a forewarning of what may come to Vermont with the basing of the F-35.

Vermont Peace Conference 2018: The Meaning of Jerusalem: The Capital of Israel? 05/12/2018

For decades the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza by the state and armies of Israel and the support of the United States for Israel have been a major source of conflict in the Middle East. Now, the President of the United States, Donald Trump has deepened that conflict by asserting that he will move the US embassy to Jerusalem, asserting against international law that the Israeli occupation of that city is permanent.

As Palestinians, the United Nations, and most of the world argue, this recognition of Israel’s claims to the entire city puts an end to any hopes of a two-state solution where the State of Israel and a future Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, will live side by side in peace. This workshop will examine the meaning of this move by President Trump and, more importantly, ask, “What's Next?”

James Spaulding, Essex High School Air Force JROTC Teachers, on the program and the plans for the Essex Memorial Day Service and Parade.

Memorial Service will be held May 27, 2016 7:30 pm at The First Congregational Church 39 Main St, Essex, VT 05452. Followed by 8:30 pm Candlelight Vigil Veterans Memorial Park, Five Corners, Essex, VT 05452. Open House at the VFW Post 6689, 73 Pearl St Essex Immediately Following.

Essex Memorial Day Parade begins May 28, 2016 at 10:00am exactly, parade steps off and leaves gate F of the Champlain Valley Exposition, follows access road to Rte 2A and turns right onto Rte 2A South (Lincoln St), follows Rte 2A south to the Essex Junction 5 corners (where reviewing stand is). Parade turns right at the 5 corners onto Rte 15 West (Pearl St) follows Pearl St to Exposition gate B (by Bouchard Pierce) where they will turn right and continue to the dispersal area.

Summer Video Production Internship - Applications Open

Town Meeting TV is hiring two paid interns to join our production team for the summer! The program will run from Monday, June 24th until Friday, August 16th (8 weeks). $17 an hour, approximately 8 hours per week. We are looking for folks who have basic or intermediate experience with video recording and editing on Adobe Premiere. Interns will work with the Town Meeting TV Co-Directors to pick stories or events that they would like to cover in our community, practice outreach skills, then shoot and edit video that will be broadcasted on Town Meeting TV's YouTube and cable channels.
