Senator Leahy and Secretary Castro attend the grand opening of the Bright Street housing cooperative developed by Housing Vermont and the Champlain Housing Trust.  The co-op was developed with funding from federal housing programs championed by Leahy on the Senate Appropriations Committee, including HOME, the Community Development Block Grant program, and NeighborWorks America, and leverages over $7 million in federal low income housing tax credits.  Mayor Weinberger introduces the grand opening and we hear from a resident, representatives of Senator Sanders and Representative Welch's office, as well as Champlain Housing Trust and Housing Vermont.

Bond, Director of Vermont Tenants & Mobile Home Programs at Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, and Forrest Gardner, educator at CVOEO’s Financial Futures Program, discuss the importance of and resources for gaining strong understanding of how financial lives impact renting.

Fair Housing Project (FHP): Advocacy/Public Advocacy, referrals, education and outreach, enforcement, and information regarding Housing Discrimination issues. Mobile Home Project (MHP): Advocacy/Public Advocacy, tenant organizing, referrals, counseling, and information for Manufactured Home Owners who are renting lots - especially those in Mobile Home Parks. Vermont Tenants (VTI): Advocacy/Public Advocacy, organizing, advice, tenant counseling, training, and information regarding Residential Tenancy. 

Ted Wimpey, Director of CVOEO's Fair Housing Project is joined by East District City Councilor Selene Colburn who serves as Chair of the Burlington Council's Community Development and Neighborhood Revitalizatoin (CDNR) Committee.  Ted and Selene provide a history, overview and purpose for the ordinance, and speak to the current process leading to a pending consultant's review of the ordinance as recommended by the Burlington Housing Action Plan.  A Request for Proposal drafted by the City's Community and Economic Development Office, and the Mayor's Office, for solicitation of prospective consultant bids is under review by the CDNR committee.
