BTV Ignite Reverse Pitch Competition 05/04/2018

BTV Ignite participates in this year's US Ignite series of "Reverse Pitch" competitions.

Digital solution developers are invited to compete for $30,000 in cash grants to demonstrate innovative ways high-bandwidth ideas can help deliver education - in Burlington, across our state, and by linking our students with national communities and resources.

The theme of the Pitch call is "Delivering Education."

We are challenging participants to consider how 21st-century technology can let educators re-imagine our classroom and other educational experiences.

Burlington School Commissioners' Corner: Restorative Practices in Burlington Schools 05/01/2018

Ward 3 School Commissioner Liz Curry is joined by Rachel Jolly, the Director of the Burlington Community Justice Center, to discuss the restorative practices currently being implemented in Burlington schools.

The Burlington School District's four-year Strategic Plan includes a focus on Climate and Culture. To support this goal, Superintendent Obeng and his staff invited Community Justice Center partners from Burlington and South Burlington to collaborate on a restorative practices initiative.

"Restorative justice is an effective alternative to punitive responses to wrongdoing. Inspired by indigenous traditions, it brings together persons harmed with persons responsible for harm in a safe and respectful space, promoting dialogue, accountability, and a stronger sense of community."

In this discussion of why Dorothy Canfield Fisher's name should be removed from the Vermont Book Award, evidence is presented that the author had a direct connection with the Vermont Eugenics Survey. Judy Dow, Franco American/ Abenaki educator, artist, and writer, presents a compelling power point on the history of eugenics and documentation on the reasons to change the Dorothy Canfield Fisher book award name. Kim Chase, third generation, Franco American writer and educator, and Kathy Olwell, retired social worker and social activist, talk about how the impact of the Vermont Eugenics Survey is still pertinent and discuss the vital need for acknowledgment, education, and a chance to heal.

Greater Burlington Women's Forum: Hidden Disabilities 11/16/2017

Deaf, autism, dyslexia, hard of hearing, neurological issues, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, psychiatric disability, intellectual disabilities, multiple sclerosis. This is a short list of specific disabilities people live with that can be invisible to others. 

Disabilities that aren’t readily apparent are important to understand. No matter your field—from human resources, social services and education, to customer service or even website development—understanding hidden disabilities will help you navigate the world better.

Panelists Valerie DeBrita, Sarah Launderville, and Angela Gowans share personal experiences, important facts, and recommend helpful resources.

Summer Video Production Internship - Applications Open

Town Meeting TV is hiring two paid interns to join our production team for the summer! The program will run from Monday, June 24th until Friday, August 16th (8 weeks). $17 an hour, approximately 8 hours per week. We are looking for folks who have basic or intermediate experience with video recording and editing on Adobe Premiere. Interns will work with the Town Meeting TV Co-Directors to pick stories or events that they would like to cover in our community, practice outreach skills, then shoot and edit video that will be broadcasted on Town Meeting TV's YouTube and cable channels.
