Peter Welch wraps up his statewide Energy and Commerce Committee tour with a roundtable discussion with Vermont’s telecommunications sector on federal obstacles to improving Vermont’s telecommunications infrastructure, including broadband and cellular phone service. Attendees include representatives from the Vermont Telecommunications Authority, Vermont Public Service Board, Vermont Technology Alliance, TDS Telecom, Sovernet Communications, TelJet, Summit Technologies, Fairpoint, Comcast, VTel, ECFiber, and Verizon Wireless. Burlington Wards 2 & 3 NPA Meeting 01/10/2013 Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven wards to encourage citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies help improve communication between the citizens of Burlington and City government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 2 & 3 meet the second Thursday of the month. Meeting place: McClure Multi-Generational Center 241 North Winooski Avenue, Next to QTees. AGENDA ITEMS Include:  Elected Officials Update, Public Works Snow Plow Update, School Budget Presentation/Discussion, School Commissioners Update, Partnership for Change. Vermont Homecare United/AFSCME 01/10/2013 Host, Matt Kelly talks with Roland Morman, homecare worker, Janelle Blake, homecare worker, and Matthew Mayers, legislative director for Vermont Homecare United/AFSCME. While homecare workers are currently considered independent providers, employed largely by consumers or their families, the state is ultimately responsible for their pay levels, how much they can work, and many other conditions of work. Vermont Homecare United/AFSCME is working to introduce and pass a bill in the Vermont state legislature that will recognize these caregivers as workers and to allow these workers to have a vote on whether they want to form a union which will bargain with the state. These caregivers are currently organizing with Vermont Homecare United/AFSCME to gain an official voice with the state. AIRS: Saturday 1/19/13 at 3:30 p.m.
