Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: Ethan Allen - Infidel or Deist? 01/20/2013 J. Michael McKnight leads a discussion of Ethan Allen's philosophy, as outlined in "Reason, the Only Oracle of Man" (1784). Although not a commercial success, it was a work he took pride in writing. It is recognized as the first anti-Christian book published in the United States. The author clearly produced it to start a rumble with organized religion of his day (Calvinism, etc.). With the benefit of more than two hundred years of hindsight, the book no longer seems very radical. Ethan Allen was not an infidel in the sense of having no faith. His faith was the same as many of our founding fathers: Franklin, Jefferson and Washington. It is a faith known as Deism, and, it is found today among millions of "un-churched" people around the world. AIRS: Saturday 2/2/13 at 9 a.m.
