Ethan Allen Homestead Enrichment Program: The Allens: A Military Tradition 11/18/2012 Acclaimed historian Willard Sterne Randall presents on the proud military traditions of the Allen family in defense of both Vermont and the United States. Most people know of Ethan Allen’s military exploits at Ft. Ticonderoga, Crown Point, and Montreal, but many people do not know that two of Ethan’s descendants also played a major role in our nation’s defense. Ethan Allen Hitchcock served in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and came out of retirement to advise President Lincoln during the Civil War. He also exposed corruption among Indian agents, introduced the coffee ration to the military, and did a fair share of writing, thus following his grandfather’s footsteps. Another Descendant, Admiral William Sowden Sims, was placed in charge of improving the U.S. Navy’s Gunnery skills by President Theodore Roosevelt, and was the Vice Admiral in charge of U.S. Naval Operations in Europe during the First World War. He also followed in Ethan’s footsteps by writing a book on the “War to End all Wars” that won a Pulitzer prize.
