Please join us for October 24th, 5-7pm at the Burlington International Airport for a public hearing on the Noise Compatibility Program. It is a chance to speak with and be informed by experts about the Federal Aviation Administration sound mitigation options for the community, our neighborhood, and your home. F-35 Arrival Ceremony 10/19/2019

On Saturday, October 19, 2019, members of the Vermont Air National Guard were joined by Brig. Gen. Greg Knight, adjutant general, Vermont National Guard, Governor Phil Scott and other distinguished leaders and guests for a formal ceremony commemorating the arrival of the F-35 Lightning II aircraft to Vermont onto the 158th Fighter Wing.

The 158th Fighter Wing is the first Air National Guard unit to receive the U.S. Air Force's fifth-generation fighter, the F-35 Lightning II. The Vermont Air National Guard, federally recognized in August of 1946 with the 134th Fighter Squadron, remains a premier fighter wing ready to serve the citizens of the state of Vermont and nation when called upon. The F-35 Lightning II marks the ninth mission aircraft the Green Mountain Boys will receive, maintain and fly. This arrival is a significant milestone in the Green Mountain Boys' history and in the future of our Air National Guard and Air Force missions for decades to come.

Operation City on a Hill: A Tale of Two Futures 10/08/2019

The episode contrasts the optimistic view of our present course offered by Harvard Psychologist Steven Pinker in his book "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined," with a more pessimistic view expressed by former CIA Analyst Martin Gurri in a book titled "The Revolt of The Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium."

Burlington Police Commission 09/24/2019

The Burlington Police Commissioners meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Burlington Police Department Community Room, 1 North Avenue. There is a Public Forum at the beginning of each meeting where members of the public may address the Commission.

Meetings are noticed via the Burlington Police Department website, the City of Burlington website, and via local media. If a meeting is cancelled, postponed, or rescheduled, information will be on the BPD website, the City website, and via local media. When possible, a sign will also be posted on the Administrative entrance door to BPD.

Burlington Progressive Party City Caucus 09/22/2019

At the Burlington Progressives for a City Caucus we hear from our Progressive City Councilors and state elected officials.

The purpose of the meeting is to elect a new Burlington Progressive Steering Committee and delegates to the Chittenden County Progressive Committee to lead our Party for the next two years. Any eligible Burlington voter who supports the Progressive Party is encouraged to join us and vote in the election for Party leadership. You could even run yourself if you are interested in getting more involved.

Last March was an incredibly successful election for us and showed that Progressives are moving forward in building our progressive vision of social, economic, climate, and racial justice across our City. But… we can’t let up now. There is so much happening in Burlington, and we need your voice at the table if we are going to continue moving our city in a progressive direction. We also need to prepare for March 2020 when all 8 City Council seats are up for election and we will have a chance add more Progressive voices to the council.

National Expungement Week and Code For BTV 09/21/2019

September 21st is the first day of National Expungement Week! Code for BTV, a Code for America Brigade (civic technologists), helps ring-in the week with an event dedicated to making the process of expungement in Vermont more transparent and accessible. Code for BTV brings together people from the legal community, those working on justice reform, and members of the technology community that focus on user research.

From their press release:

"Together we will work to create an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of our state’s expungement process. Our hope is that this effort can inform legislative decision making and provide a roadmap that any law professional could use to start navigating expungement on their own. We will be creating a repeatable set of user research steps that can be used to work with justice impacted citizens (those needing or having achieved expungement). These steps will be tailored to our state’s expungement process. The brigade will deploy these steps at public outreach events to gain an understanding of the logistical and emotional impact that our state’s expungement process has on our citizens. This event and follow-up outreach events will allow us to see expungement in the state both from the inside looking out and the outside looking in."

Code for BTV demonstrates the free, open-source tool built for VT Legal Aid that automates much of the effort in creating expungement petitions in Vermont. We will be using fake data for this demonstration so that anyone may see how it works.
