VICII: Coming into Force - Enforcement of the UN Nuclear Ban 01/13/2021

In a major victory toward nuclear abolition, the United Nations has ratified the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons, which will come into force in international law on January 22, 2021. After that date, all activities supporting nuclear weapons will be illegal for the parties. The implications of this for the future makes for a fascinating discussion.

John Reuwer, M.D., is a member of Physicians for Social Responsibility Committee to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, and member of the board of World BEYOND War. Covid Response Telecommunications Recovery Plan 12/08/2020

The Vermont Department of Public Service has released the Draft COVID-Response Telecommunications Recovery Plan and is seeking public comments and feedback on the Plan.

The COVID-Response Telecommunications Recovery Plan was commissioned under Sec. 15 of Act 137 (2020) by the Vermont legislature and funded through the federal CARES Act. The purpose of the Plan is to “reassess the State’s critical connectivity needs in light of the COVID-19 public health emergency and to reevaluate broadband deployment objectives going forward.”

The Plan was prepared by the independent consulting firm CTC Energy and Technology, in partnership with the Vermont-based Rural Innovations Strategies, and incorporates feedback from consumers who filled out a survey regarding their need for broadband services in light of the COVID-19 Emergency, as well as a link to a speed test to provide information about broadband speeds in real time.

A loose coalition of current and former city councilors, community leaders and others come together to advocate reinvesting the Burlington portion from the sale of Burlington Telecom back into the telecommunications company, Lake Champlain Broadband, assuring a seat on the operating and management board. Sustainable Williston - Single-Use Plastics Forum 01/16/2020

Lead presenter Maggie Eaton shares her experience of working on the Vermont plastics campaign since March 2019, including the passage history of the Vermont House and Senate plastics bills and how the new legislation will be implemented. She offers perspective on why this new law is so important - how plastics get into our environment, where they go and what they do to animals, us, and the natural world. Maggie also offers tips on how to live without single use plastics.

Co-presenter Ethan Hausman answers questions about plastics recycling in our community. He explains what makes a particular plastic item recyclable, how to interpret the “resin codes” on plastics, and helps clarify your understanding of bio-plastics and compostables.
