Burlington Police Department Press Conference - Apprehension of Alleged Shooter and Attempted Murder Suspect 07/30/2019

On March 24, 2019, the Burlington Police Department responded to and investigated a shooting on Clarke Street in Burlington. That investigation identified the alleged shooter and attempted murder suspect as Alfred Leon Wisher, age 37, of Burlington. Immediately following the shooting, Wisher fled the scene and ultimately the state of Vermont. The US Marshals Service in the District of Vermont, Burlington Field Office, adopted the fugitive apprehension case and began pursuing Wisher with aid from the Burlington Police Department and many other local, state and federal partners.

On the evening of July 29, 2019, Alfred Leon Wisher was located and arrested by the US Marshals Service, Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, in conjunction with the Savannah, Georgia Police Department. Police had received information that Wisher was living in Savannah, Georgia and was using an alias. Law enforcement combined information and efforts resulting in the apprehension of Wisher. Wisher was allegedly in a stolen vehicle and led law enforcement on a brief foot pursuit when they attempted to apprehend him. Wisher was taken into custody without further incident.

Burlington Police Commission 07/30/2019

The Burlington Police Commissioners meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Burlington Police Department Community Room, 1 North Avenue. There is a Public Forum at the beginning of each meeting where members of the public may address the Commission.

Meetings are noticed via the Burlington Police Department website, the City of Burlington website, and via local media. If a meeting is cancelled, postponed, or rescheduled, information will be on the BPD website, the City website, and via local media. When possible, a sign will also be posted on the Administrative entrance door to BPD.

Justice For All TV: As Goes Burlington - Part 2 07/26/2019

Host Mark Hughes is joined by Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo. With the honor of having the police chief on the show, Mark takes the time to get his perspectives on the way in which Burlington is moving forward with racial equity, diversity, and inclusion. They discuss the gathered data collection from 2018 such as car stops and use of force. Mark also gets a perspective the Police Chief's insight on diversity in the department, what the city is doing at a local level, and what is being done at a state level. 

Last week the Governor announced the appointment of the first “Racial Equity Executive Director” in Vermont history. This long awaited appointment is the latest step in the implementation of Act 9 (2018), a bill that created a panel and this Executive Director “to identify and work to eradicate systemic racism within State government.” During this episode, Mark and the Police Chief take a closer look into the duties of Racial Equity Executive Director. They also take a look into the Racial Dispaities and State Stystems Report (ACT 54) from 2017. This report was put together by the Attorney General and Human Rights Commission Task Force.
