This dynamic Conference, The Power and Promise of Community Health Workers in Vermont: Paving a Path to Equity, is designed with and for Community Health Workers, allies, partners and organizations that are supporting or who are interested in strengthening the CHW capacity and professional workforce in our state. The Ethan Allen Homestead’s head gardener, Tom Sharpley, discusses the accomplishments of Ethan’s wife, Frances (Fanny), Vermont’s first known native botanist and her collection of flowers at UVM’s Pringle Herbarium. The presentation will explore what 18th-century gardeners were growing and how they used their gardens to provide more than just food for their communities.

Veterans Day Commemoration 2022 11/11/2022

The timing of the event originates in the end of World War I, when the armistice between the Allies and Germany began at 11:00 am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year.

This annual event is hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wares (VFW) Howard Plant Post 782 and is always moving and inspirational. It has been a great privilege to attend this event as Mayor, and I invite you to join me and many others at Battery Park tomorrow to honor those in our community, including many City employees, who have served our country in the armed forces.

The Juxtaposition: Slavery Is Abolished - No Time for Victory Laps 11/09/2022

From the Vermont Racial Justice Alliance:

Throughout this journey of PR. 2 (the constitutional amendment abolishing slavery) we have been confronted with confusion, denial, ridicule, rejection, exploitation, attacks, and lies. We never considered that the system that we were addressing would be our biggest impediment and a source of disinformation, misinformation and contention. We have fought this fight through both chambers of the General Assembly twice and yesterday the people spoke on the matter.

They voted YES.

Our intent has ALWAYS been clear - that this constitutional amendment shake Vermont into the awareness of the legacy of the institution of slavery - systemic racism AND that they would do the work of addressing it.

We'll discuss this and the rest of the states with slavery abolishment on the ballot with our guest Max Parthas from the Abolish Slavery National Network.

VICII: Anti-Semitism at UVM? A Constitutional Analysis of Louis Brandeis Center Complaint Against the University of Vermont 10/25/2022

In October 2021, the Louis Brandeis Center at the University of Vermont made a complaint against the University alleging that the University was not protecting Jewish students against anti-Semitic discrimination, harassment, and assaults. After an investigation conducted by the University and President Suresh Garimella, the President defended the University against the allegations of anti-Semitism.

These allegations of anti-Semitism did not die. With the Complaint, demands have been made, among others, that “UVM must adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Working Definition of Anti-Semitism.” The Louis Brandeis Center also asked The University of Vermont to issue a statement denouncing anti-Semitism in all its forms and recognizing that Zionism is a key component of Jewish identity for many students at UVM.”

The Juxtaposition: Vermont, the First State to Abolish Slavery-ish 10/12/2022

Amending the Vermont Constitution is an incredibly long and arduous process. The road to prohibit slavery through this process has been exponentially longer. First, why is Vermont prohibiting slavery if it was already abolished? Second, what was the process that led us here? Finally, what will the impact of prohibiting slavery be in Vermont in moving forward?

Homework: Read Article 1 of the Vermont Constitution (30 seconds)

The Vermont Racial Justice Alliance remains committed to prohibiting slavery and indentured servitude in all forms in Vermont. The existing slavery exception clauses in Vermont constitution are NOT symbolic but carry the same weight as any other language in our constitution and therefore MUST be amended with prohibition language. We're grateful that the constitutional amendment process in Vermont (one of the most comprehensive in the nation) has afforded this State the due diligence required for such an important matter. Never having been a State (or nation) where slavery hasn't existed leaves us uncertain of the impact that this constitutional amendment will have over time, but we know that it is morally right to constitutioinally prohibit slavery. We do know that this reprehensible crime against humanity has left us with the insidious monster of systemic racism and we remain committed to eradicating it on all fronts. This constitutional amendment is a part of that process and will serve as a memorial in perpetuity.
