Burlington Receives Two National Service Grants for Service Positions in the Community 09/21/2010

Burlington is fortunate to be one of the beneficiaries of President Obama’s new efforts to grow volunteerism and service as one means foraddressing people’s needs, in particular during the economic downtown. Burlington’s Center for community and Neighborhoods has received 2 distinct grant awards to infuse the community with 40 diverse AmeriCorps and VISTA organizers who will serve in government, schools and non-profit agencies. The newly passed National Service Act will support a new wave of service and civic action to help tackle the nation’s toughest challenges. This renewed effort is evidenced in Burlington where over 300 individuals applied to compete for the 40 year-long service positions in the community.

Burlington Ward 6 NPA Meeting 09/02/2010

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to encourage citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies help improve communication between the citizens of Burlington and City government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Ward 6 meets the first Thursday of the month. Meeting place: Greek Orthodox Church 600 South Willard Street.

A celebration of our right to vote starts with banner and sign making at the Burlington Police Department, followed by a parade to City Hall Park. Sponsored by the Neighborhood Planning Assemblies and the Center for Community and Neighborhoods.

Wards 4 & 7 meet the third Tuesday of the month. Meeting place: Robert E. Miller Community Center 130 Gosse Court.
